First, some background:

I am using an ATI x1800XL. With the 6.3 drivers, the AVIVO has really started to pay off. Hardware rendering is working great.

VMR9 gives rock solid playback (pre-recorded material) but if I use forward/rewind controls it tends to hang on video (audio continues). The program doesn't hang, and I can usually get the picture back by going out and in. This happens on pre-recorded material.

VMR7 also gives rock solid playback without the problems associated with the forward/rewind controls.

VMR9 custom ate up too much cpu so I haven't played with it much.

Overlay doesn't work on the 2nd display so I don't mess with it much.

Now, as I said, pre-recorded material is rock solid and gorgeous. Live TV flickers. The flicker looks like an interlacing issue, so I spent an hour playing with interlacing on the AVIVO control panel, but never could clear up the flicker. The flicker is bad enough to make LIVE unusable.

I'm looking for any suggestions on other things to look at. I am going to check tonight to make sure both drives are still UDMA, they were when I started, but I'm rechecking everything.

Have you tried different settings for Live preview and de-interlacing in the config-misc-tab. The same for using ffdshow or not in playback-tab.
Perhaps try another mpg-decoder, in playbacktab
AMD Athlon 64 3000, HDD: 80, 120, 200 GB, Hauppauge 350 + 150, MVP, Asus 6000L Laptop client, Asus X50sl client,
Fritz!box 7140 modem/router, GBPVR 1.3.7.

in the config misc tab make sure you've set de-interlacing to "encoder passthrough". now the behaviour should be similar to pre-recorded playback.
