AAAAH! Managed to register after 10 attempts!!!
...anyway...

I just found out about this great piece of software. Please bear with me for a while for an introduction and I hope you can help too.

I have used GotTV for quite some time, along with myHTPC. Then Meedio came and GotTV changed to GAM. Then problems started. GotTV plays ok if I start it stand-alone, but when started from within Meedio, I get no audio. I then tried GAM (GotTV successor) but this was even worse... program more frequently craches than works. I cannot even tune to any channel. Anyway... these problems made me look for other PVR solutions (this is where GBPVR comes).

Living in Greece with tvtv.gr dead (any takers?) I don't have a real interest for EPG (although yes it's interesting if the program implements it - I might be able to use it in the future) and I also have no interest in other functions or plug-ins (since for other functions I have Meedio or whatever) than playing live-TV (or timeshifted), recording tv and scheduling recordings. All these controllable with nice OSD, NOT looking like computer software (since I need it as part of my HTPC system). Also controlable with simple (better configurable!Wink keystrokes that I may assign to my remote (but it's my problem I don't need the program to bother if I have a remote and what remote this is). Nothing else. THIS IS WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR. It's simple.

To make things clear: Can GBPVR be a plain fullscreen PVR (directly in full screen, without messages or graphics) with on-screen controls (non-mouse driven, configurable key driven) for play/pause/rew/ff/exit that hide when I don't use them? No need for skins or whatever, except if the skin is what would make GBPVR "transparent" for me - integrated to my HTPC setup. Also EPG to be able to be disabled.

Can it do something that simple? How?

The very little time I "played" with the program, I was confused with the controls and I don't like the fact that when I start it, I have to go through the menu (I only have TV + a media module set in the path of the recorded videos + exit) and THEN it starts TV. Then I didn't know what to press for the TV and record and timeshift functions (I am still trying to find a clean keymap listing). Also everything is in text, which is not configurable (I would turn it to Greek but since I cannot even configure the font, even the media module I renamed showed as Chinese)... at least it could be icons (universal language) like oldie-GotTV... Last but not least, I am not using my Hauppauge remote (I have a PVR-350) since I am using a different RF remote, but I am not sure if the program can work without the Hauppage remote (do everything with keyboard commands - as I said better CONFIGURABLE).

So what do you think?

(sorry for the long post)

I'm not sure why the registration process is not working for you, but I'm happy to manually register if you send me your preferred username and password.

You can start GB-PVR with the -livetv command line option to go straight to the tv feature.

The GB-PVR interface does not require a mouse. Information on controlling GB-PVR with either a remote control control or the keyboard can be found here: http://www.gbpvr.com/QuickStart/shortcuts.htm

It does require a list of channels, even if you dont intend to use the EPG. You can manually add these channels.

You can change every thing to greek using the language.xml file. There are examples of these files (french, dutch etc) on the plugins download page.

I hope this helps.

as you can see I managed to register, thanks anyway

yes I found the -livetv parameter and already seen the shortcuts page... I would love the shortcuts to be configurable (so we wouldn't need special Girder scripts or whatever). Also CH+, CH-, VOL+, VOL- (in live tv) seem to be only on remote?

yes I also know it needs a list of channels (I have added some) but I hope that it won't bother me with using the program that I don't have an EPG source (for example freeze waiting to download EPG data or displaying gibberish when I don't use EPG at all... it shouldn't display that it can find no info on a channel in this case... I hope you understand what I mean)

I'll check the language.xml but as I said, I already renamed a menu item to Greek (from inside the configuration program) and shows gibberish... (since menu font is not configurable)

thanks for the quick reply, hope I can reach a point where this thing is semi-invisible in my HTPC setup

CH+, CH-, VOL+, VOL- are the same as the arrow keyboard keys (up, down, left, right).

It wont cause any problems only having manually created channels. Try and rename something using the language.xml. If that doesn't work, send me you language.xml and I'll determine what has gone wrong.

I found VOL+, VOL- working with the same shortcuts as in Music Library but CH+ and CH- doesn't work (it just stays in the first channel I have configured)... also pause shortcut works but strangely enough REW and FF do not. All this through the keyboard shortcuts (I haven't tried configuring my remote for these yet - and as I said I will not use my Hauppauge remote).

As for the language.xml I'll try tomorrow and let you know. Now it's 1:15 in the morning here. :-)
I remind you that I tried renaming a menu item through the configuration tool and it messed the text up. Can I change the SAME menu item through language.xml? (the thing is that if we cannot change the font and font-script used, then we do nothing)

Thanks again.

You have to be enable the 'Use SBE if available' option to be able to FF/RW livetv. Its a bit rough, but much improved in the next release that I'm currently working on.

You can change the font in the skin.xml

found several skin.xml - I'll look into it later

(note a bug here) I edited config.xml because my video recording path included Greej characters... when I selected the folder from the configuration program, it was then screwed up (Greek turned to [Image: rock.gif]?[Image: rock.gif] so it didn't find the folder) - if I edited the path in the xml myself, then GB-PVR failed to load (couldn't parse config.xml) - I had to remove the first line from the file (where it desctribes the encoding) and then it worked fine

then I edited language.xml (there are no instructions btw) and supposed that I should use the button labels and then the translation - this worked ok

now if we can do something better with the keymapping?
(for example make it configurable or something)

I have managed to SKIP using Girder in my new HTPC installation up to now (but I guess Girder is calling me back... right?)
