First,

Yesterday I was transcoding a movie with Mencoder. Half way through I crashed my computer. Remarkably when I restarted the encode it actually resumed from where it left off. This is way cool!!! I think it can only do this if there is a log file.

Also yesterday, I tried to install Quicktime. Previously I only had to download the Quicktime player - kind of bloated but i'll give them that. Now I find you have to download a 32 MB Itunes install. Is this true? If it is, man, I really dislike Apple to the point of almost calling it MS --shudder--.

.....and install RealAlternative while you are at it so you can get rid of most of the RealPlayer crap.

Apple has been forcing you to install the iTunes for a while (at least since Quicktime 7 was released). They became the other "evil empire" for me when I realized that they force you to buy the Pro version to watch video in fullscreen mode (like on a TV, for instance? Duh, Steve Jobs!). In the free version its disabled. Now even M$ doesn't do that with WMP.

QuicktimeAlternative is pretty cool although doesn't quite keep up with the very latest features from Cupertino (don't think H.264 is supported yet, for instance). Haven't had a lot of luck with Media Player Classic (bundled with QA) either.
