I have just spent a whole day and 180 mile round trip answering a panic call from an aged aunt whose Laptop was blue screening (page fault in a non page area) Nothing would get it to boot, Vista repair could not do it - even a Linux boot disc failed to start (tty locked out) After finally geting it to boot to safe mode I managed to set a chkdisk on boot which on booting back to safe mode ran silently - and got the computer running again.
A full scan with Avast and TDSSKiller (my fav Rootkit weapon till now) proved clean.
I then proceeded to update the software and tidy up the computer. After removing over 300 empty folders from application data, I was uninstalling an old version of LAV filters, when Avast found a rootkit - which it was able to remove.
Another Chkdisk was needed before the computer could run a disk defrag.
What I would like to know is anybody's recommendations for a really good Anti Rootkit solution - This is the second time in a year that I have had to do battle with these evil beasties - and in addition formatted my HTPC due to paranoia

It's not an overly complicated system - it's more - overly simple operatives
