How does it work?

I was just curious about how exactly does my MVP talk to GBPVR. How does this all work? Is there a full gbpvr running on my MVP? Is it like a glorified VNC? Just wondering how the MVP shows up the different menu and have video with OSD overlay, ...

It's nothing at all like VNC. The 50,000 foot view is the MVP is a small network appliance running a LINUX build (the .bin) that processes video and sound as well as the GUI of GBPVR (or Haup, if you use their software).

Actually ggee was partially right. To get the menus of GBPVR the mvp uses a variation on the VNC RFB protocol. The variation is the bit that controls media. Play stop, ff, rw etc.

Once you select a piece of media, like a video to watch then you're actually using the MVP directly to open that video file and watch it. The live tv is similar, but when you hit the live tv entry, you tell the gbpvr recording service to open up one of the tuners and then the mvp gets told, "look here's a file to play"
