Situation:
1) Watching TV in timeshift mode
2) Flip through the channels
3) Timeshift mode disabled automatically according to the config setting
4) Channel surfing is fast because of preview mode
5) Found interesting show, stop flipping channels
6) After 15 minites miss a word
7) Try to skip back
= Enable timeshift mode :-(

Solutions:

If timeshift mode was automatically removed by a channel change then:

1) Display an overlay to remind that temp live preview mode is on

2) Automatically re-enable timeshift after configurable delay [config option]

3) Insert billiant suggestions here...

Unfortunately it needs to stop and restart things to enter timeshift mode. This is because the process that is using the tuner changes. Initially it is gbpvr.exe when in live preview mode. To enter timeshift mode, GBPVRRecordingService.exe takes control of the tuner. There is no way to do a seamless switch over.

Personally, even if it's not seamless, and there's the usual delay and message that timeshift mode is starting, I think it would still be useful. Though a configureable time limit before going back into timeshift mode would be nice, otherwise it could get annoying if its hard coded to 5 seconds or something like that.

Sounds a bit ugly to me.

It would indeed be a bit clunky but I also would still use it as the same delay is there when I re-enable timeshift manually anyway. A visual reminder would be nice so you would remember to re-enable timeshift mode yourself.

This is truly my only wish for GB-PVR as it's frustrating to miss something and to be unable to skip back to hear/see it again. If channel surfing in timeshift becomes fast enough someday then the other solution is never use live tv preview at all.

Would it be easy for a plugin to do this visual reminder thing? What calls could a plugin make to query timeshift/live preview mode?

Would it be possible for gbpvr to use an idle tuner while in live preview mode to do a timeshift of the currently previewed program without displaying it? Would that possibly reduce the "enabling timeshift mode" delay assuming your cpu & throughput can handle the two streams? Hitting pause would just show you what GBPVRRecordingService.exe was already doing on the other tuner.
Obviously the idle tuner would have to have the same channel available for this feature to kick in.

Sub does using an idle tuner in the recording service during live preview sound like something that could help ease the "enable timeshift mode" delay? Is there some reason why this could not possibly work?

France is in the final! Allez les bleus!

I understand your desire to have something like this, but to be honest it sounds pretty messy, and probably not worth the effort in my book. If I had nothing else to do, I might be a bit more positive on it.

Its also some something that would only be useful to a small subset of users - it wouldnt be useful to the large number of users with single tuners. It also wouldnt be useful in multi-tuner setups, like the one I use, where each tuner has a different channel lineup.

Also, it would still take a couple of seconds to stop the live tv graph and start playback of the file being recorded by the other tuner, so it may not give you exactly what you want anyway.

I agree the cost benefit of something like this doesn't fly. Thanks for the reply.
