I have several DVDs on my hard disk that exist as VOB files in the appropriate DVD directory structure (mainly converted divx files so that they could be watched on normal DVD player).
Can these be played on the MVP via GBPVR ??

I would also like this option. Possibly if we select "Watch DVD" and there is no physical DVD in the drive we can select one from a folder.

I was just thinking that any folder under the videos folder that just happens to contain a DVD directory structure would be 'playable'.

Can DVD ISOs be played ?

No. There is no support for DVD playback via the MVP. You can play DVDs on the PC though.

You can normally watch DVDs via GB-PVRs Video Library, but in the new release there is a bug that means only .ISO file DVDs are playback from the Video Library. If you set <UseNewVideoAndMusicLibrary>false</UseNewVideoAndMusicLibrary>, you'll probably also be able to play directory/VOB based DVDs.

Yes, but you need daemon tools installed.

are you saying that the second 2 point here only work on the PC, and not the MVP ?? If so, I will have to convert everything to mpeg/divx/xvid etc. Can you recommend a free tool to do this ?

Correct. There is no support for DVD playback via the MVP.

If you're going to convert the movies, then MPEG2 is the best format for the MVP since it is natively supported (unlike any of the AVI formats).

I've not personally dont this, so no, I cant provide a recommendation. This sort of question has been discussed lots of times in the past, so a forum search should turn up some recommendations.

The XDVD pluging will stream DVD Vob files held on the hard drive to an MVP.
You can download it from the wiki pages.

I wonder if xdvd tools has been kept up with changes in GBPVR.

Is it technical reason or ethical reason preventing to do native .iso support in MVP/GBPVR.

It would be awsome to have native iso support in MVP using GBPVR.

Sub,

Thanks for the quick response. Just wondering what are the typical problems?

I know Xbox Media Center took quite a bit of time like more then a year or so to support DVD Player inside XBMC with team of people working together, so I can totally understand the difficulties.

Do you think it will ever be supported in form of ISO or using daemon tools?
