Here's the deal.

I am quite a bit ignorant about capture cards, but I want to get the best card possible that is 100 bucks or less, and I will probably buy it from newegg.com. Am I going to cheap with such a decision? What can a top of the line capture card do that a 100 dollar or less one do?

I don't know what brand or kind to get, and I know the software on this site is compatible with a great many brands and models. But I still don't know what direction to lean in.

I apologize for my ignorance, and if it matters I am running Windows XP SP1 with 256 RAM and an Athlon XP 2400+.

Assuming you are going to use it for analogue capture, the Hauppauge pvr-150 is usually the way to go. A Hauppauge pvr-500 is virtually two pvr-150's in one card. Just make sure you get a version that comes with a remote, or make sure you can remote control it in some other way you find convenient enough.

I suggest you buy either the WINTV-PVR150 w/ Hauppauge Remote & Blaster or the WinTV-PVR150MCE (without the remote) and buy a MCE Remote c/w 2 Blasters seperately. Either is very easy to set up and you will have no problems with them and your STB.
