I frequently record political commercials with my GBPVR so that I can burn them to disk and share them with others. I use software to edit an entire show or newscast down to just the commercial I want. However, a 30 second commercial is still several hundred Megs in size and I have to burn it to a CD or DVD which has to get delivered to others.

Can anyone recomend some software that will allow me to do the following:
  1. Edit GBPVR MPEG files by cutting out parts I don't need
  2. Save these files in other formats for viewing on the internet - perhaps RealPlayer, Quicktime, Windows Media
  3. Reduce the screen size and resolution so that these files can be either emailed or uploaded to something like UTube?
Or, are there any other creative ways of getting to the same end result?

Thank you in advance.

What bitrate/resolution are you recording at? At the "medium" setting, the GB-PVR default, a one minute recording is around 50megs.

Why not try youtube (http://www.youtube.com). You can register for free and upload short length files onto there. Then you can send a link to those you want to watch it. Works quite well actually.

Cuttermaran for editing, projectx for demuxing (so cuttermaran can edit it), mplex1.exe (i think that's the name) for remuxing, AutoGK for no hassle conversion to divx or xvid (.avi) for optimal internet viewing experience (read: compression).

Googling the names can eventually lead you to download sites. All are free.

Thank you kindly. I'll check it all out and give it a whirl.

Yeah - I could be wrong on the size thing. However, 50 Megs or 25 Megs even is still larger than I'm shooting for. What I'm aiming to do is make small files from 30 second ads that can be emailed. Many email services limit attachment sizes to 10 Megs or even less.

However, your response made me think of a new idea. I'm pretty sure I noticed somewhere that I can set the bitrate/resolution for each of the three quality levels. I'm now wondering if I could choose to really dumb down the "low resolution" setting and achieve what I'm aiming for without having to use lots of editing software.

Thanks,
Chris

Use windows movie maker and turn it into a wmv...you can adjust the quality to whatever seems to look best for that files size...

Your computer already has windows movie maker installed...well should

Either divx or xvid could do 30 secs for 4-5 megs with good quality (2-pass encoding). Lower the resolution, and get even smaller files. If you don't need quality to be all that great, smaller still.

I think you can do it all in one (free program): VirtualDubMod.
Open MPG, cut whatever, save as avi(whatever). Works great I think.
It does have a bit of a learning curve, but it's worth it.

Yeah, my several program solution resulted from grabbing VDmod and then going "Now what?". I had used virtualdub in the past to edit avi's, but even then, I wasn't sophisticated enough to do it right (loss of sync). If I want to edit any kind of show, I record in mpeg and use cuttermaran.

VDmod actually reencodes after making cutpoints, does it not? One advantage to Cuttermaran is no re-encoding. You assign cutpoints on b-frames, it writes the file, and its done. Having never done it the other way ('cept with one avi file), I can't say how much of an advantage that is. But it does seem simpler.
