OK, I think I'm now aware that AVI format is a "container" that there are a few quite different format codecs (MPG etc.) used inside an AVI file but why do small video files from my Digital Camera play back jerky with audio out of sync in all of WMP, Videolan, and Mediaplayer classic, when an DivX/Xvid AVI file has no such issues.

Does my PC simply not have enough grunt for this? They play back OK on my Digital camera (albeit much smaller, so I guess this may a reason).

Had the same problem when I was using my PIII 450... Now that's much weaker than your signature says, but as soon as I upped my computers all of them worked well.

I should point out though that I'm having some trouble viewing my clip on the MVP. Both ffmpeg and ZProcess aren't happy with the AVI, even though ffmpeg documentation says it should be no problem...

I disabled ffmpeg for playback as I thought it was taking too much CPU, but problem persists.

Windows pops says 640x480, 18 secs, 88kbps audio (8 but PCM), Video 30fps, 1789kbps. I guess this rate is the killer.... ?

Are we talking MVP? AVI to MPG transcoding for MVP?

I just checked and on my new Sempron 3100 I can transcode 640x480 at almost 1 to 1 secsond. THat's not good if I'm MVPing...

Last time I checked with my Wifes MVP, even cutting the encoding time in half and using a rez of 352/240, and 60 secs transcoded in 29 secs, the vid just won't play.

In another thread, somone was having trouble because the Audio Frequency (using ZProcess) was not set ,and so ffmpeg was using the same as original. Just checked and it was at 32000 kb. So I guess the next thing to try would be to set the audio freq in the ffmpeg commandline to 48000 or set and save the setting in ZProcess...

It may not be processing power (although that is usually a factor), but hard drive speed and fragmentation. If the drive can't read the data fast enough, everything goes south. If something else is using the drive at the same time, the heads have to seek, buffer, seek the other material, buffer it, and back, ad infinitum. End result is crap.
8 bit pcm audio isn't (usually) a problem, but 1.6mbps is probably at the outer limit of CPU and hard drive speed.
You can never have enough tuners!

Nope, at present it's just on the PC. If it can't cut it natively on the PC, there's probably no way I can do on-the-fly transcoding to the MVP with my present unit, which I'm happy with as long as I record and play mpg's only.

I'll look into that again, but I checked DMA is being used and I schedule weekly defrags.

Funny thing is it "used to work" (a bit) better, but I did a bit of a cleanup removing and reinstalling stuff (incl. GBPVR) and it seems to have bcome worse.

Well then, it's your computer, plain and simple. I had the same problem untill I upgraded. DV-AVIs would play on my Wife's p4 1.8 256, but not well. They would play on my Piii 450 256, but not well, and forget about capturing...

BTW, I have decided firewire capture is better than USB2.0 transfer IMHO

I'd say that if it continues to record your programming let it do it's thing.

Oh Yeah, you want the server to serve to the MVP, (and possibly with xvid AVI aspect ratio adjusted with ffmpeg/ZProcess)

Well my piii is becoming a windows 2000 firewall, ftp and web server, multi-homed (multi-ISP) router...

You're sure, that you have the correct CoDec for the Files from you CAM installed on your Machine? Some Manufacturers like Canon or many other uses an own CoDec.
Sometimes the playback of these files is even possible with standard XviD CoDec installed, but the quality is bad and some stuttering, like you describe.

What's the exact Modelname of your camera? Perhaps we can have a look for a needed(?) CoDec?

Yeah, i am thinking same of a P3 System for this work. I am considering to use it even as SAN System. We have never enough space ^^;
