Hi guys. First off, BRILLIANT APP - most most useful and i for one am really greatful.

Now for my problem - only a slight problem. Im trying to setup a client / server setup using 98.13, watching TV across my wifi network im getting a lot of stutter / failing. Im moving to the client / server setup from my own setup using an additional network card and vlc, which i spent a fair bit of time debugging and found that often video bitrate over 1000 KBits per second was too much for my network (it's my household setup that is quite often used alot). Im not too concerned about the quality difference as I just use the setup to watch tv on my laptop whilst not in my room. Is it possible to set this lower, as it keeps defaulting back to 1500. I have looked for where the setting is stored so as I could change it manually. The main reason I want to move to this type of setup is because I have an external Sky box which is controlled by GBPVR and dont want to accidentally change channels during a recording - my old way changed channels outside of GBPVR, as the tuner will already be in use Im guessing this will stop it from changing channels. Its no real problem if i cant do this - ill just move back to my old setup.

Many thanks for any replies.

I've never tried a setting this low, so I cant comment on the quality, but you can set a lower value in the direct.ini file.

If you're using a Hauppauge card, I'd also look at dropping the resolution since that would help with the lower bitrat

I continued trying to get smooth playback with the client mode of GBPVR but really couldnt acheive it, but whilst looking into possible solutions I found that the Enhanced Web Admin had now got the ability to stream, and after only minor tweaks to the settings im getting really really good qaulity smooth playback. Im gonna run with this instead as it better suits my need's anyway but thanks for your answer. I thought I'd post this as a possible reference point.

Yeah, I suspect for one reason or another you just couldnt get a consistently high enough transfer speed on your wifi setup. Glad you found a solution that'll work for you though.

So, What bitrate video is about the max that a wifi network will handle. I've just got a wireless router and card for a spare PC downstairs.

As I will have 1 x device on the wifi, and 2 x PC on the wired - will I have any problems streaming? I usually use medium recording at 3500 kb/s

Thanks

I assume you're not asking me? I dont use any wireless stuff here, so no expert on these matters - I'm part of the tinfoil hat bridgade.

I guess it depends on the flavour you're using (802.11b vs 802.11g vs pre-N), how much other stuff is on the network, how many neighbours are stealing bandwidth, and how strong your signal is.

Just thought you were the oracle of all knowledge. If I owned the house, then I would chuck cabling everywhere, but I dont so the g/f said I have to use wireless to downstairs.

I am going to be using 802.g. This "stealing bandwidth" - is that if the neighbours have wireless, do they interefere? or is it actually someone using my wifi network (complete wifi newbie)

Anyway, this doesnt need to be in this thread.

Thanks

Stealing bandwidth is if your neighbor is actually using your internet connection. It may be intentional or not. If you leave your wireless network without any encryption (open), your neighbor might unknowingly connect to your wireless router specially if it has the same name as his network (SSID). I would change the SSID to something unique and turn on encryption. WPA encrytion is good. Stay away from WEP. With the right software, WEP can be cracked in as little as 10 minutes.

Hope that helps.

I was using a g network with 54mbps (although at most of the places I sit it can differ - i have had 48 and 36 mbps - guess this is down the signal). The network consists of 5-9 Wireless devices (including phone's with wifi) and usually 4 or 5 wired pc's. When in use as you can guess theres a fair amount of stuff whizzing around... add to that the fact that the wifi is unprotected and several neighbours also use wifi and there could be a large amount of usage. That said whilst using vlc or the Enhanced web admin I can get really really good smooth video... using the Enhanced web admin on lan quality with middle resolution and 128 kbps audio using wmv2 and mp3 gives a nice quality for what i need... the network can handle full res but for some reason it actually looks better on the middle res.
