I know, I know...
PVR 350 doesn't support encrypted DVD out.

I would like non-encrypted DVD out. So I can watch my home made DVD's of my kids through GB-PVR.

Since this is the wishlist, I'm wishing.

If this does eventually make it into GBPVR, will it work on the MVP?

There are more problems than not supporting encrypted DVD out. It can only playback MPEG movies. It wouldn't be able to disc show menus. It wouldn't be able to handle AC3/DolbyDigital/DTS audio etc.

That not to say it cant be done, but it would be very very difficult. At best you'd probably end up with something that converts the DVD vobs to MPEG2 on the fly, and just plays the movie (in stereo with no menus).

Would it be possible as a plugin? I'm considering writting it if so. I could take an existing opensource DVD player from Linux and possible convert it.

I may even be able to use the stuff from MediaPortal. Not sure yet...

The problem with this sort of approach is you end up with raw decoded frames, but no way to send them to the PVR350. The PVR350 will only accept MPEG2 data, not raw video frames.

An appoarch may involve pushing these raw video frames through an mpeg encoder to turn it back into MPEG2 data, but I'm dont think this would be an easy project.

I think you need to look at a solution like videolan, convert input to an mpeg2 and use this. As far as I can see, GBPVr cannot play an mpeg-ts stream, but can play an mpeg-ps stream.

Maybe using something like libdvdread/decrypt would be a starting point.

Isn't a VOB just a special mpeg2 file?

Why can't this file be broken apart and played like any other mpeg2 file?

GB_PVR can play vobs, search the forum as Sub proved this. The problem is playing it on the TV-out. Most DVD's use AC3 which cannot be played on the TV-out of the hauppauge cards. They only support mp2.

So from what I can see we need to read a DVD (decrypt the stream if necessary), demux the video/audio, transcode the audio to mp2, mux the audio/video and pass this onto the GBPVR service which plays the mpg2 file.

It would be great if we can figure out what the required steps are as we can then figure out what would be required of a plugin to allow DVD's to be watched.

Maybe in the developer thread we can work out the requirements for this?

Colin,

So you want the sound comming through the PVR 350 also?

I don't mind playing the sound via my 5-channel surround sound system (sound card on computer).

If I could play a non encrypted VOB using PVR 350 out (without sound), I would be happy.

This may not be an issue for me much longer. I have an XCard on order.

For those who have a mediaMVP we would need to mux the audio/video together, but if we could get video going on the TV-out of a 350 it would be a start.

colin,

I have a MediaMVP and wasn't even thinking of that. Still, if someone knows how to split the vob and run the video, that would be a great "first step".
