How hard would it be to setup a windows client only install, accessing the back end in the same way as an MVP?

I'd quite like to be watching sports on TV in the study while telling the wife that I'm working.

Cheers,
JohnO

I'm not quite sure what you are asking, but you can install and run GBPVR on a machine with no capture card or TV out.  I have it installed on my work machine now.  I can watch videos, DVDs, look at the TV Guide, check the weather etc. just fine.

Or, if you are asking to run the client on one box and access the MVP or whatever capture card you have that is physically on another box, sub would have to answer that. I imagine there are many technical issues sub would have to deal with. I don't want to speak for him, but I wouldn't be holding my breath [Image: smile.gif] Now, you should (I believe) be able to record the sporting event or whatever on the main GBPVR computer, then play it back on your office computer. It wouldn't be live, but I think it should work [Image: smile.gif]

Yeah, I'm thinking along the lines of watching live tv and all the rest of the functionality, on a machine that is not the capture and storage server.

A kind of MVP emulator on a PC in the simplest sense.

This is also functionality that I'm looking for. I have a laptop and another home computer in addition to another computer that I use as a home server. The home server does the recordings and stores the MP3 files, but I'd like the client machines to be able to use the UI to interface with th scheduler and to watch live TV.

I'm still confused if GB-PVR can or cannot do this?  There also seems to be 2 questions here.  What is the functionality of a client computer(no tuner capture card) running GB-PVR with a server computer and the same lan? {has the tuner capture card and GB-PVR}

Can the client computer :
1. play any archive from the server? (ex encoded TV show)
2. play an archive currently being generated on the server? (2min delayed TV)
3. play a video signal currently deing encoded, but without archiving? (live TV)
4. schedule the recordings on server PC?

Hi,

If I understand correctly, the answers are

1) yes (simple file sharing - not a GBPVR issue)

2) No. It seems that the file is locked to other readers.

3) No.

4) Yes. GBPVR runs a web service. You can connect from another PC and see GBPVR's EPG, schedule and cancel recordings.

I have a current setup that would allow you to make use of GB-PVR on a networked PC.
Its not a 'frontend', and does require the program to be recorded though.

I use Tight VNC (http://www.tightvnc.com) to view my PVR desktop and to make adjustments to the PVR box. (including accessing GB-PVR remotely), and either 'Zoomplayer' to view previously recorded shows on my study PC or 'VLC mediaplayer' (http://www.videolan.com) to stream the show to my PC as its being recorded by GB-PVR

Not quite as streamlined as you wanted but gives the chance to view live TV only a minute behind?

I think that you are missing some functions here. You are using only TV functions for examples. The client should be also able to listen to MP3's and Internet Radio and to see slide shows of pictures that the "server" computer is aware of.

I realize that each client computer can be independently configured for playing music files and finding pictures, but doesn't that defeat the purpose of having a client in the first place? All the configurations should be done on the server with the client "seeing" what the server sees.

The Media MVP is an example of this. It's a client. You don't configure different MP3 directories to be seen on this client. That's done at the server. You see whatever the server sees.

It's also possible that I'm crazy, though!    [Image: wow.gif]
