Hello!

I've been lurking here for some months I guess and finally got round to replacing Showshifter with GBPVR on my Asus Pundit/Celery2.8 powered PVR - mainly because a I like the web based TV guide and the MVP support. Showshifter did what it said on the tin, but was a bit counter intuitive at times.

Anyway - after much reading up on this forum, and the very useful XMLTV, I got all the important parts working - epg, web service, remote, etc. I just have this one stubborn issue that is so far not responding to treatment. I've tried a number of things to no avail which I'll list, and so I'm looking for other possibilities.

I'm recording via a WinTV Nova-T (90002), and on every recording I make, on playback, there is a pause at precise 30 second intervals in both the video and audio. This happens if I playback on GBPVR; media player on the same machine, or media player on another machine. I've more or less ruled out problems with playback, because of this, and because all of those players, GBPVR included will play back old mpeg2 recordings (made by SS on the same machine that now runs GBPVR) without problems.

I've tried the Intervideo and Cyberlink BDA MUXes, and both successfully make recordings, but with this issue. Watching live TV is fine - no pauses. I then reinstalled SS to get the MUX back, saved this, uninstalled SS again, and registered the SS MUX. Confirmed this was there with MuxChecker. When using the SS MUX, the recording service hangs as soon as I either try to record or watch live TV. This MUX works OK with SS.

Current BDA MUX details:-

Found: CyberLink MPEG Muxer
FILE: C:\muxes2\AutoDVRconvert v1.3\MpgMux.ax
VERSION: 5.0.0813

Found: ShowShifter MPEG PS Writer
FILE: C:\Program Files\Home Media Networks Limited\ShowShifter\MpegWriter.ax
VERSION: 3.12.0.2945

Other things I've tried:-
  • Switched off subtitles
  • Switched off teletext
  • Set recording service priority to "high"
  • De-interlacing set to "pass-through" and "none"

No abnormal CPU activity is seen when playback pauses - I'm playing back in Overlay mode and CPU use is about 15-20% during playback.

Incidentally, the MS Video decoder checkup tool says that both the Intervideo and Cyberlink decoders I have on all machines are not compatible with the "synchronization feature of media player 10". Is this relevant?

Any suggestions gratefully received!

set logging to debug, do a short recording & playback, attach the logs. try using MS-DVR or TS Mux (only available in version 0.99.5). might also give a reinstall of MP10 a try.
that "not compatible" could be relevant. do you have a chance to test playback of a recording on another machine with MP9?

I'm having the same problem with a virtually identical system.

Nova-T PCI (90002)
GBPVR 99.5
Found: CyberLink MPEG Muxer
FILE: C:\WINDOWS\system32\MpgMux.ax
VERSION: 5.0.0727
(incidentally it looks like i have registered the same mux twice, not a problem is it?)

I have tried the DVR-Ms mux and the Cyberlink, both result in recordings which momentarily pause every 30 seconds (i finally got the stop-watch out). As the OP i have played them back in media player and on a different pc with the same problem.

I recorded something with the Cyberlink mux and have attached my recording log (hope its the right thing - i changed the extension).

Just noticed looking in it that it is having trouble finding the correct filter so defaults to DVR-MS - running re-register filters.bat doesnt help.

I thought i remembered reading about something to do with perhaps the webserver, or menu's being refreshed and this recording problem i the past. But my memory and my ability to search the forum are letting me down (might be imagining it).

Thanks.

I think they might need all of your logs, as per sticky

K.S. - thanks for the suggestions. I've not had a chance to do some more tests with verbose logging, so these logs are with logging set to "Error". I'll capture some more tomorrow.

The current log-set (i.e. the one with no number suffix) shows a session using DVR-MS, 2 shows a session using the Cyberlink MUX, and 3 shows a session using the SS MUX - and you get see the log ends abruptly on this one just as GBPVR attempts to connect the MUX to the recording graph.

I hadn't tried MP9 but I have tried lots of other players including MP10, DiVX 6.4 (same problem) and Media Player Classic 6.4.9.0 - which struggles to play it at all - in .5 second bursts every 2 seconds or so.

More experiments tomorrow.

it's not connected with the used MUX, it's because of the device/driver...

okay, take a look at this part of your log

whatever the reason behind that, it's tuning the recorded channel every 30sec, resulting in a short hick-up during playback. the problem occurs while recording, so no matter which player you use, the recorded files are f#!cked up.

take a look at this thread, i had a similar problem, effect were worse, but possibly the same cause?

http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=22213

as far as i see you have the PCI version? allways try the following step until successfull:

- shutdown your pc, check if the card is really pluged in the PCI slot (might also unplug it and plug it back)
- reboot, check signal strength in livetv (Ctrl+O), try recording again
- shutdown pc, plug your card in another PCI slot
- try to update the drivers
- delete drivers (use hcwclear.exe to remove the drivers), shutdown pc, unplug the card, reboot, delete any still existing files from hauppauge, shutdown pc, plug in the card again, reboot, install drivers, check again.
- use google to search if your board has known problems with your nova card
- use google to search if your board has known problems with specific PCI slots (in the past there were problems with the PCI slot next to the AGP slot)

yes, i know it almost sounds stupid to do all this, but i don't know any other & faster foolproof way to get it working.

ps: you might also check the nova card in device manager for possible IRQ / resources issues

At last it seams I am not the only one suffering from this. See my previous post http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=23181 although I don't see much in common in the systems themselves, the problem definitely appears the same and I believe to be at the recording stage rather than playback. I have been thinking that this was some kind of problem with my motherboard but perhaps not. Lets hope hope someone has a good idea here because I am clutching at straws with mine.

have you checked your logs regarding "VERBOSE SubmitTuningRequest". do they also happen every 30sec while recording? if so, it's a problem with the device/driver, see my previous post, it's worth a try

Well spotted K.S. - it seems this is indeed the cause. Checking the signal stats in live TV (pressing CTRL+O) reports the unlikely result of 210%, with 0 "quality".

My guess is that GBPVR is asking for the signal strength at the 30 second intervals, getting back an implausible answer, and is therefore requesting a re-tune. Turn off the signal checks, by setting BDACheckSignalStatusDuringRecording to 0 (from the other thread you mentioned) and the problem goes away. A quick glance at fray_bentos logs indicates the same thing is happening.

Of course the underlying problem of the strange reported signal strength is still there - and is probably going to be down to one of the other causes you mentioned (i.e. the drivers, or some other firmware issue perhaps). I'll get around to re-seating the board and re-installing the drivers at some point.

I can only assume that this problem was always there when I ran SS, but SS didn't bother checking the signal stats.

I've only run a few tests, using both the Cyberlink and MS DVR MUXes on 2 channels but they both recorded without error. Still no idea why the SS MUX doesn't work, but I only need one working combination!

Thanks for looking at this for me - as with a lot of these things, it was staring me in the face and I couldn't see it! If I find out anything more about the cause on my set-up, I'll add it to the thread.

Marc - sounds spookily similar - I did search the forum for things like "30 seconds" and "pauses" etc but didn't find your previous post. I could have tried more searches but it was taking me about 4 tries to get those 6 characters in the box correctly Rolleyes
