i am currnetly working on a live-cd or thumb drive to use as a GBPVR client mode instant, unbreakable os...
currently i have a bootable thumb drive with dos+BartXPpe with dot.net 2.0 installed and msjet and ADO and directx 9b...
should work on 90+% of the machines out there with the drivers included...Smile

i still have to get the gbpvr install captured with the registry stuff and all, but the platform is working pretty well...plays mpeg2 videos well with mplayerclassic, and may be able to get media player 10 on there also..
sound is working and both ati and nvidia video drivers..
it's too large with .net 2 to make a cdrom right now but i'll see if i can't lean it up a bit...
works on dvd disc tho...Smile [and thumb drive/small usb hard drives, but slow booting..]

will post updates and news as it comes...Big Grin
[next stop, pre-installing GBPVR in client mode]
will have to see what parts of dot-not it needs and doesn't work...

p.s. can also be installed to hard drive as only os...Wink

awesome - Would be nice to have a baseline to see if I'm having config problems or machine problems.

I guess though, you'll have to distribute pre-disk format + write up instructions on how to build the image b/c of licensing issues. I don't think you're allowed to distrubute a full complete disk image when it comes to WinPE

yep, exactly....i stumbled accross the dot.net plugin recently and knew that was the last step...Smile
but yea, would have to build a 'kit' so users could make it themselves but that wouldn't be too hard...

mainly now it's just making sure all the components of dot net are available and if i can make gbpvr 'static' install...

it's really reallly slow on a thumb drive of any kind so will probably best as cd/dvd...but USB not too slow after booting, just during loadup..

i'll have to break out my vmware to start testing this properly..

still a few hiccups on the dot-net front but very close already..Smile

hey sub, need a bit of info to get this working..
is there any way to turn off logs or specify where they are put? as this will be a cdrom install, either turning them off entirely or letting me put them on temp drive would work..
i tried running gbpvr after adding reg entries and it just exits, i supposed because couuldn't write to logs...
also is there anything not obvious about the install process? any other reg entries i don't know about? [other than the main one in hkey_local\software]
or other dependancies? [other than .net2 and such...]
i assume the client mode won't need the service installed at all if it doesn't check for it..also, is any temp data written to gbpvr\ when using sqlite?
my temp dir is writable...so everything has to go there..

is anything in weird dir's like common files?
oops, i forgot about the filters...[*.ax's]
will it barf up if it doesn't find msinstaller?
without logs, hard to know where to look...Sad

oh and seems .net 2 only works from cdrom....go figure...not from hd installation..
but i have sample .net 2.0 apps running and vb 2005 as well...Big Grin
i'll have to build a fresh machine and gbpvr install to see what other changes i can see upon install...
any hints would help alot...Smile

Just an idea: If you don't want to write anything to disk, you could maybe make a ramdisk on which you can write your logs and other temp stuff.

guess what...it came up!! Big Grin:eek: :p
i booted into my os and ran the gbpvr install from a hard drive....and viola!
it came up actually...the config works too...
when i tried to hit the guide it complained about not have channels setup tho..

but that kinda proves my concept! lol Big Grin

so any help you can give sub would be appreciated, as im almost there...

oh and using xp-pe installs has to be legal if built with your xp, as Sony and HP and others are using it for restore dvd's and on hard drive restores as well...
[and i haven't heard of anyone that has been bothered by MS about it yet]

so far it looks like we'll *just* need a way to deal with the logs, in client mode the sqlite database locks should be all on server side...

but it does come up without .net problems so i'm stoked that i'm this far already...lol

now i just have to config a good setup with working client mode install..
and play with the features in the various client modes..i may come into a problem with remoting user credentials..

and lean things up a bit...about 800meg right now..
so i may be able to squeeze it onto a cdrom...

i'll send some logs when i play around a bit more..
Cheers!

you forgot the third option: if impossible to disable logging or specify location, why not copy gbpvr install to ramdrive & start it there? Wink

Not currently, but for the next release I'll try to add a config.xml setting to specify the log directory.

It doesnt need it to function, but the recording service is still installed and run on the client in a normal install. You dont need to run it, but you'll probably find if run the config app and hit 'ok' it'll try to restart the service.

No, everything is in the GB-PVR directory.
