I have been playing with MEncoder for a while now, and can say that MEncoder should be working for a majority of those that try.

MEncoder held the promise of faster transcoding and colour correction.

Yet what I find is the FFmpeg more consistently transcodes files. With minimal tweaking of dimensions or bitrates, FFmpeg, really transcodes well...

I will not be dropping support for the MEncoder feature, and if you still have troubles, I'd be happy to look at them...

But I've decided that I will start using only FFmpeg (although I am working on a solution to change transcoders on-the-fly)

Very soon, I will be making some hardware changes to my MVP to have POTs, so I can adjust the brightness and saturation with a little screwdriver...

(I've just run into an Electronics buddy, and he says no problem....)

I'll keep you up to date...

Hi Frank . . .

Thanks for all the work. Can completely understand your frustration. In my business I work with complex database solutions. Can spend weeks on end trying find a better, faster method, only to find that the first method was actually the most stable and reliable . . . But at least it's all a learning process . . .

Have a super week!

Mencoder worked for me really well until... today.
I tried to watch the latest episode of 24, and with MEncoder it was choppy and lost sync immediately. When I switched to FFmpeg, all was OK (except for the dark & red picture on my MVP...)

file: 24.S06E06.HDTV.XviD-NoTV.avi

I would say that it is not a day to day thing, but a file to file thing. I'm guessing it's a torrent, and those sources are questionable. Even though they're labled the same...

If you still have last week's 24, try that again with MEncoder... I haven't done a thing to make it act differently...

I might try re-encoding the AVI with ffmpeg, and then playing it back with MEncoder.

You did know that with GB-PVR 99.5, you can now have ZProcess process even MPG files?

So maybe Transcoding from AVI to MPG with ffmpeg, will transcode well, and then Viewing the MPG, but with ZProcess Transcoding on the fly, will fix the colour...

In case you didn't know, it's on the Utilities Tab, GB-PVR settings, 'MVP Transcode All Video'. >> True (You'll have to restart the Recording service....) After the restart, whenever you try to view any video at all, it will go through ZProcess...

I don't get it... this file works with MEncoder and VNC ("experiment") and then with the MVP it's choppy and loses sync. How can this happen?

I have a few files that play great on the server, and won't play right on the MVP. Mostly I have sync issues.

Give up on that file for right now. How is other files, how about last weeks 24?

I had to do some cleanup so I don't have last week's 24 (could not find it again from the same source). I will keep watching. Thanks...

You were right. It was a one-off. A single file that did not work. I am very happy with the pre-conversion to mpg that allows me to skip.

Thanks!
