Hello everyone...

I recently bought a panasonic 42 plasma hdtv, it has 2 HDMI inputs and 2 Component Video inputs.

I am wondering what is the best way to use this TV as a computer monitor and run GBPVR on it with whatever plugins I decide to use or what ever tuners are available to it.

I have read a few forums, and a few of them recommend NOT using this TV as computer monitor for fear of burn in or other issues.

Just curious as to what you guys are using out there?.... do I get a DVI video card, and DVI-HDMI cable and just connect and go.. or should I look into other options... and leave this TV out of the mix?

I've been using a DVI cable my Fujitsu plasma, and its given me a great picture. I'd say a DVI-HDMI cable would probably be the way to go. I have my video card producing the native resolution of the panel, and the picture is great.

Its nice having a rock solid video output on the TV, with non of the dot crawl or flickering that is usually associated with composite/svideo type connections.

I have been so sorely tempted to get a 42-47" LCD and this is one of the questions I have been pondering. Best way to attach it. I have DVI on my video card, so it sounds like I need to put DVI as an important criterion on inputs. Thanks!

My biggest question is how well recorded SD will look on these HD TVs. I know some are supposed to be better than others at scaling down to SD. I've seen some, though, that just look sad....

P.S.
Now, if I can just convince my wife that the TV and its stand could go nicely in front of the fireplace so we can cut down on screen reflections.... ;-) We never build a fire...

Yes, is very true and a big consideration. To be honest, when in comes to SD video, it often just looks better on an old CRT tv. CRT TVs are very forgiving. LCD and Plasma's are more likely to high light compression artifacts etc, and there seems to have quite a bit of variance on how good they are at coping with this. My Fujistu does a pretty good job.

just FYI there are video cards now that have HDMI outputs on them. and pass the audio over HDMI.

my suggestion is in line with what is said above, use a HDMI input, and beware of burn in.

lots more fun information can be found on avsforum about burn in etc. just be prepared to spend a while readingWink

I have to say I am so happy that my TV has a VGA connection, makes it SO much easier to hook up a computer, and drive the panel at its native resolution.

I'm using the VGA on my 42" Plasma too. I found I prefered the VGA picture quality more pleasing to my eye than using the DVI/HDMI input.

I am using the VGA input for windows desktop, using *almost* the native resolution of my LCD tv (1360x768 instead of 1366x768), and DVI for GBPVR only (at 720p). Works great.

Does the 6 pixel difference cause any problems?
Does it cause extra scaling with an HDTV tuner card?
I'm not planing on buying an HDTV soon, however most of my friends have them & were looking for ways to play their ripped DVD's on their HDTV.

One of my friends has a TV that is 780i & I was wondering what other's were using to get SD content to look decent on HDTV's.

Most of the other AV forums just say FFDSHOW.
I might have to agree as I can see a quality difference when playing files through GBPVR on a PC monitor at 1024x768 with postprocesssing on & off.

Along with the other filters you can enable.
Though it also sucks the CPU's
