Anybody watch the game? USA did great even with Blanco playing for Mexico. This may be odd for a lot of people. I am a fan of both teams since I have a parent from each country, I have lived and attended school in both countries, and I have citizenship in both countries. So no matter how it went it would have been ok. Great game.

ROTFL it's just a marginalized sport. at least in the US&A... and only there it's called soccer. rest of the world uses the name football. i allways wondered why american football got that name. it has it's heritage in rubgy, with exceptions it's played with the solitary use of the hands, it could as well have been called (american) handball? does anybody know about the history of how it came to that name?

Yes, the name was thought up by the same person who came up with "World Series" :-)

Like most things that evolve from something else, the name doesn't usually change. It did start from "Rugby football" as it was played by several American Universities. Rugby is the school that developed that particular style of football and the ball in that sport was referred to as a football.

Eventually the word Rugby was dropped due to the change in style of play in the US.

"Australian rules football" had a similar evolution from Rugby football, and uses the term football as well.

So you see, the whole problem is in England, they called several sports "football", and at one time, many schools had different rules, and the ball was called a football in those different sports.

that makes perfect sense, very good explanation, thanks Smile
so thanks to the british empire we have different sports called football, we all have "miles&more", even for these parts of the world where you don't know how long a mile/ft/yrd is Wink

I can't believe I haven't looked this up until now. "The word "soccer" originated as an "Oxford '-er'" slang abbreviation of "association", and was popularised by a prominent English footballer, Charles Wreford-Brown." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_(word)
