hi. here in australia(at least) the people who program the tv shows on each network are stupid, so sometimes when a 4:3 tv show is showing they still broadcast it in 16:9 with black bars either side. thats fine - if you have a widescreen tv, but on my 4:3 box I end up getting a black border around the entire picture top, bottom and sides. I am aware f7 can change the ratio, but I have been unsuccessful in getting the outcome I want...

is there any way to automatically detect black borders and remove them while watching (not post processing).

If you press F7 a few times to get to the 'Center Cut' aspect ratio, that should give the effect your're looking for.

You'll need to be using one of the VMR renderer options for this to be available. It wont be presented as an option if you're using Overlay.

There isnt currently any way to automatically detect black borders - too much processing that I wouldnt really want the app to do anyway, so probably not something you'll see in the future either. Sorry.

hehe, yeah that wasnt giving me the result I wanted... BUT I just realised I am running in an odd screen resolution, so I'll check that out when I get home....

If "center cut" doesn't do exactly what you want, then n config.xml you can adjust how it cuts. I think you might even be able to define your own, extra, custom aspect ratio?
I'm not always right

Yep, exactly.

Can custom ratios be defined in Overlay mode? I have this same problem when programs are displayed in SDTV and letterbox. My TV will only allow me to stretch the width when using the HDMI interface, so I'd love to stretch the height! I've never been able to get anything to display properly than Overlay mode.

Yes, but not with negative numbers in the <AspectRatioModes> settings you add. Any with negative numbers will be ignored with Overlay renderer.

well I modified center cut to be <-0.125,-0.125,1.125,1.125> which cuts off12.5% from the top bottom and sides. ie 640*12.5% = 80 pixels off each side and 480 * 12.5% = 60 pixels off each top and bottom. works well.

OK, here's what I figured out so far:

VMR9 - F7 works perfectly. Problem is, none of the VMR9 settings work on my system. Anything that has motion gets jittery, bad.

VMR7 - System seems to work right. Right now only tested SDTV. F7 does not work properly. It creates strange aspect ratios.

Overlay - works correctly as far as the system is concerned, but no F7 to do as I wish, as you already know.

This jitter would most likely either be caused by your video decoder, or by the quartz.dll bug discussed here in lots of other threads.
