Can subtitles be enabled when using XDVD?

The movie Syriana needs subtitles for the scenes where people are speaking languages other than english. XDVD is not displaying those subtitles.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

yea, both vlc and mencoder can do the subtitles, overlaying them on the video...
but such selective subs should be already overlayed...if you enable the subs with mencoder or vlc, it will probably produce subs for the whole movie..
search the xdvd thread as there should be several examples of subtitles capable batch lines..

Thanks for the reply. Can you point me to the xdvd thread? I couldn't find it.

Thanks.

I have been trying to get good info (lots of bad info on the net) for subtitles with MEncoder and VLC.

I have had success with displaying SRT in MEncoder, but I'd like to be able to adjust the position. (-sub-pos isn't working for me...)

I'd also like to see an example of SRT subs with VLC, maybe with screen position too...

Help me PBS kenobi, you're my only hope...

Well, it works! Scene specific subtitles are now on the VLC generated mpg file.

For the good of the cause, here are a couple of things a came across in the process:

1) Figuring out which subtitle track you want is tricky. I found this site that shows how to do it using VLC. Remember to subtract 1 from the track you want! In my case, I needed subtitle track 7, so I specified subtitle track 6 in the batch file. (I found that I needed track 7 by using VLC as outlined in the link.)

2) Make sure you add the VLC commands to the SECOND (usually rem'd out) line in the XDVD batch file. pBS points this out in his post (linked in the post above), but I didn't read that at first and spent a lot of time fooling around with the first line of the batch. (Don't forget to rem out the first line when using the second line.)

Thanks.
