Over the next few years the analogue TV service in the UK will be switched off and all terrestrial transmissions ( i.e. not satellite or cable ) will go to the digital DVB system ( freeview ). The DVB freeview system has the capacity to broadcast in High Definition ( HD ), but only if the frequencies freed up by the analogue switch off are dedicated for this use.

The move that allows HD on freeview is threatened by the government office OfCOM proposing to sell off the freed up frequency spectrum to any highest bidder.

If this sell off of our frequency spectrum goes ahead then the provision for HD television in the UK will be entirely in the hands of a few private for-profit companies with no possibility of competition from BBC channels. Thus the ONLY option for HD will be via commercial channels probably operating pay-per-view or subscription services.

The chance of general public benefit allowed by the advances in broadcast technology will have been taken away from us and put in the hands of a few private companies.

Don't forget we have already paid for the Set-top-boxes ( including VAT tax on the purchase and Income Tax on the money earned ) that allows this sell off to go ahead.
Shouldn't we get something back from this ?.

Please sign the government e-petition to stop this sell off at
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/CitizensSpectrum/
( Urgent Deadline 19th March )

More information can be found at the campaign website
http://www.hdforall.org.uk/

or from the BBC at
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6451041.stm

Please pass this on to anybody you think is interested. We need as many signatures as possible on the petition if we are to avoid another government disaster.

Thanks
Andrew.

If there are HD channels then surley that means we have to upgrade the hardware again any way ?

That been said I'll have a look at this as there is a public expectation that a portion of 'normal' channels will be HD Freeview and not paid for, mind you when has that ever stopped a new been passed ?

Feel free to copy and use....

Quote:Dear xxxxxxx,

I would like to ask you to investigate an issue which not only covers this area but the impending Digital TV switch over for the whole of the UK.

http://www.hdforall.org.uk/ is a big national campaine with some very well recognised supporters including the BBC, Five, ITV, Channel 4 and a number of hardware OEMs.

I would appreciate it if you can look at this matter as it seems wrong in my eyes for Oftel to do this when there will be a public expectation that some 'normal' channels will be HD ready although I do expect that some may be pay channels. This move would wrongly take away from those that can not afford it the ability to receive these channels on HD thereby creating an elitest community and extra profits for those that will charge for the channels.

That been said it may also be worth sighting the current debacle of Topup TV and the original OnDigital as examples of how well commercial companies have managed similar projects.

Yours sincerely,
Terran

I was watching supernatural last night on freeview ITV2 and it was either very poorly encoded or ITV2 doesn't have enough bandwidth. But I can see HDTV on freeview doing the same, pack in as many channels in the bandwidth and sod the quality. Even with H.264 the broadcasters will cut corners just look at the 544x 576 channels.

They've already spent the money they're expecting from auctioning off the spectrum - just like they did when Band 3 was sold off.
