As much as I remember, there was a feature in previous versions, that the aspect mode ("Auto", "Remove letterbox", etc.) is "remembered" per mode (i.e. one for LiveTV, one for Videos, etc.

So, if it did before - it doesn't anymore.
If it never did - i'll put it in the wishlist?

It remembers the last aspect ratio, but its one value for every type of media (not separate for live tv, videos, etc).

I just checked and its still working fine for me.

What does "type of media" means then?

You see, all my Live Tv is SD, hence I prefer to see it with black bars to the side (and sometimes in "remove letter box"), but all my movies (AVI) are wide screen, so "auto" is what I use.

It only remembers "THE" last aspect ratio, regardless of what you were doing (live tv, dvd, recording, video library etc). It does not remember separate values for each. (ie, if you had it set to 'auto' in live tv, then view a video file it'll use the remembered 'auto' aspect ratio)

Yeah, auto is definitely the best thing to use if you can. It only makes sense to use one of the other modes if you really need to (usually because of oddities caused by broadcaster - for example transmitting 4:3 inside 16:9 frame rather than real 4:3 etc).

Well, I have a 16:9 TV (and so I set in the config), but all my LiveTV is 4:3. Unless I'm confused (will verify tomorrow), Auto stretches my LiveTV to full screen, which is rarely what I want (fat people... I prefer the side black bars, or the "remove letter" if the show has black bars on top and bottom).

However, with movies, Auto is fine, cause filling the screen is what I need.

I'm not aware of any problems with this, so you might need to double check.

Remember you need explicitly set the video decoder, rather than relying on 'system default', for the 'auto' aspect ratio to do its thing. Also make sure you video decoder isnt trying to manage the aspect ratio.

i have the same problem, and can verify that at least mine does NOT remember whatever the previous media was -- I know because I could watch 20 avi's of the same thing (for instance, a season of a television show, all encoded the exact same way) in a row and will have to press F7 until I reach the correct AR.

Works fine here. What video renderer are you using?

I meant video renderer, ie Overlay/VMR7/VMR9/etc, but now that you've mentioned you're using the ffdshow video decoder...

The ffdshow decoder can cause this problem if it is attempting to manage the aspect ratio itself. Temporarily try a different decoder to see if the problem goes away.
