I am currently using the MCE remote with the 4 coloured buttons. It seems that the buttons are not mapped properly, plus others like FF do not work at all, if you use the skip buttons instead, and push them too rapidly, the PC restarts. I think the windows driver must be OK, as the control works correctly using Mediaportal. I also have the hauppauge remote that came with the Nova T-500, sadly only around half the buttons are mapped on this. I am unable to find the file to edit in system32. I have intalled the hauppauge IR drivers, but it only seems to install the runfile and IR32.DLL. In any case make no difference to its operation. I am afraid the more I read, the more confused I get, not even sure if I need IR.EXE running at all?

Would appreciate any advice at all.

Also quite unrelated, when GB has a problem running say an invalid file, missing webcam etc. It seems to take a very long time before it decides it cannot take any action, and return control to user, sometimes it locks up completely. Maybe this is something that can be addressed in later releases.

Many thanks for all previous help.

They certainly work on my MCE remote. They're not used for much, so you may not have noticed? They're used for toggle subtitles on/off (if enabled), or changing audio tracks (DVDs), or starting teletext (if enabled).

On mind they do a 10 second skip.

OK, thats not good. I can only assume some driver is shitting itself, since thats the only type of process that could trigger the machine restarting.

Reproduce the problem, then zip and attach the logs and I'll take a look. The delay before deciding it cant play the file will depend on the directshow filters you have installed. Some bad combinations can cause directshow to take a really long time to try to find a combination to play that file. All you can do about this is remove some of the directshow filters and hope you find the offending one that is causing the delay.

If you are looking for the irremote.ini, mine is in the windows dir.
Do a search if that doesn't work.

Thanks for the advice chaps,

I will see if I can reproduce the restart thing. I found the irremote.ini in windows. Is this the MCE one, Hauppauge or both. Not still really clear if I should have ir.exe running to use the Hauppauge remote, different opinions on this. I dont know if I have direct show filters installed or not, unless they are part of GB?

What remote are you using exactly? I'm using the version 1 and version 2a remotes shown here: http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Hardware/MCERemotes. Both work really well for me.

Regarding the Hauppauge remote:

The irremote.ini in the windows folder is for this device (I don;t know if it is also used by MCE remote - I thought it was for Hauppauge only but then I have only used this remote)

If you have clicked the button to fix Hauppauge 45 button remote, it adds a [gb-pvr] section to the end of the ini file.

ir.exe needs to be running in order for this file to be used and then everything should be ok.

If ir.exe is not running (correctly) you will find that down, left, right and OK work but not the back/menu button. Similarly, the green power button puts the pc into standby. I have no idea how this happens without ir.exe (smoke a& mirrors I think).

I have experienced problems with ir.exe needing to be restarted after the pc wakes up but that;s a different matter.

The remote works fine for

I am using the 2A remote currently. I will try Installing IR.exe and give the Hauppauge remote another bash. Did not work for me last time, but maybe I need to click on patch 45 button remote while IR is running. Again thanks again to all for your advice. If I get this working OK, I just need to get the client to find the TV server, but thats another challenge.

The hauppauge software IR.exe etc arent used at all if you're using the 2A remote shown on that page. Its not a Hauppauge remote, and its not a Hauppauge receiver, so no Hauppauge software required. It uses the Microsoft eHome remote driver.

Assuming the drivers are installed and functioning correctly, all you should have to do is set the remote type to 'MCE Remote' in the config app.

no that won;t help but what you do have to do is restart ir.exe to load the new ini settings.
