Hi,

I have GBPVR setup in a client/server setting. If I try to run GBPVR on the client machine when the server is not running, GBPVR shuts down on the client after the "Initializing..." splash screen. Unless I have misconfigured something, it looks like GBPVR needs the server to be running for the client to run in a client/server setup.

Would it be possible to run GBPVR on the client machine even if its not able to connect to the server? In this scenario, the GBPVR client could disable features (e.g. TV viewing capabilities, etc) that are unavailable, while enabling features that are installed locally on the client (e.g. DVD watching, Plugins like YouTube, Weather plugin, Netradio, etc).

If this feature is already available (i.e. if I have misconfigured something), feel free to move this to the appropriate forum.

Thanks,
-Topper

This is kind of a sucky workaround, but could you go into config and uncheck "client"? Then start GBPVR? Like I said, it's not ideal, but it would only take about a minute or so to do.

Agree its a sucky workaround. What makes it even more sucky is that I need a keyboard/mouse and can't use the workaround on a dedicated GB-PVR client connected to a TV and controlled with a Remote.

Hmm, maybe a less-sucky, albiet still sucky, workaround would be use a macro program like "HotKeys", where it records mouse movements and clicks. You could probably set up a key on your remote to execute the macro.

It's still not an ideal solution, but since the whole point of a server is to "serve" - it should be on most if not all of the time anyway.

I'm just trying to brainstorm ideas that you could "get by" with until there's a suitable solutionSmile .

Still sucky (and I have "HIP", "AutoIt" and "Logitech Harmony" - all the tools to achieve something like this).

For example - consider this: I have GBPVR server in the living room, and a client on my laptop. However, this one laptop is a "work" laptop (yes, I sometimes have to work), so when it is connected to the company's network (via VPN), it does not "see" the home-network, thus failing to connect to the server.

Also, server could be down for different reasons (maintenance, etc), so blocking other clients from even doing non-server related tasks is a pity.

I think a "timeout" in the server connection would be a better idea...
Or, as a fall-back solution, a command line switch to the client to tell it to connect or not to the server.

* MS Remote Keyboard
* Logitech Harmony 880 [via MS Remote Control Reciever]

Hi,

To get around your problem of not being able to connect to the gbpvr server when VPN'd into work, just add a static route to force no-routing to GBPVRs IP.

e.g.

Say your machine has a lan ip of 192.168.10.1 and GBPVR is 192.168.10.10. Do this:-

route add 192.168.10.10 mask 255.255.255.255 192.168.10.1

Thanks for the suggestion! I also have the same VPN problem as madcat and I can try out your suggestion above and see how well it would work for my needs. I still do hope that someday (whenever sub gets around to it) we can get a better/more permanent solution built into GBPVR.

Thanks,

This is still sucky but you could use simple DOS batch files and assign them to a key on your remote / icons. You have two 'source' copies of the config file and one 'active'. The DOS batch file then overcopies the 'active' config file with the one you want (client with server avail. or client without server avail.) and kicks off GBPVR as a client or not as the case may be.

I've had to do this with various bits of software in the past when using different versions/locations etc.

Oh my - this will work, done in the past too, but don't forget about it next time you run the Config app... very dangerous solution.
