we all know that the MVP does not play back HD files or anything thats over the PAL/NTSC rez without transcoding it. since my HTPC is also my one and only PC that i'm using for other tasks i was wondering if there's any (PCI) hardware board out there that does MPEG transcoding on the fly (faster than realtime). i'm assuming it should allow the CPU to tell it to get the initial stream from the HDD and dump the transcoded stream back to the HDD with whatever specified parameters of the finished product. oh and of course it should be supported by gbpvr Smile
my CPU is too slow to do any work AND watch transcoded HDTV on the MVP Sad looking for solutions without significant hw upgrades or costs Cool

I have not personally seen any. There are, I believe, a number of chips that do transcoding and some of them are in use in TV tuner cards. The manufacturers seem to have gone out of their way to avoid exposing that part of the interface, however; making sure that the pins are not physically connected to anything but the A-D converter chip. i found this card KWORLD VS-L883D PCI on newegg and reviews say its able to transcode on the fly when editing captured mpeg files. its only 20 bucks and i wonder if this could ever be supported (even only from a plugin) to transcode HDTV mpegs saved on the hdd to the SD rez of the MVP? Big Grin i think that would help lots of ppl to avoid painful CPU time for transcoding recorded stuff...
anybody working on GBPVR can take a look at this thing?

To be honest, its unlikely to be something I'd add support for (too niche at this stage). If it comes with a command line converter utility, then its possible you could still use it.

That said, are you sure it does what you think it does? ie, will it transcode files you already have on disk, and not just from its svideo/composite input? will it accepted high definition video and transcode to standard definition?

Making the move from SD to HD is going to kill a lot of our pocketbooks...

But I've resigned myself to it. If I want more power I have to buy more power.... Yes that means Hardware expense...

I seem to remember a thread about this with the ATI x1300 or higher video cards. Some new codec that they had that would transcode files in half the time on their hardware.

Ah, here's the link http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...ranscoding
I guess they determined that it was just a myth. Anyhow, interesting reading.

Personally, I'd love a hardware card that could do the transcoding for either "on the fly" or batch conversions...

apparently this thread has some explanations of how to set up the ATI codec to transcode.

i have the ATI codec i just dont know where to get graphedit from or how to set it up... more reading for me!

i've read this stuff up and apparently it's no encoder for editing, just a simple software capture device. i'm assuming the less experienced are happy about it's "functionality" and speed because they have fast computers.

still would be nice if i could find a mpeg encoder board in the 100 bucks range and use it for on the fly encoding Wink

I think the best Transcoder board is a CPU/RAM/Motherboard combination called a new computer LOL Big Grin

Just out of curiosity, what sort of transcoding do you guys want to see? Mpeg to Mpeg transrating or Mpeg to AVI, FLV etc. transcoding?
