My first post so I must say that the GBPVR is working really well with the MVP (live TV, DVR, photos etc).

Only problem is that on some MPEG files, no audio comes through. Note that these MPEG files were originally VOB files (home videos burned to a DVD by a TIVO DVD burner) that I transcoded to MPEG files using this

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/VOB2MPG

Note that the transcoded MPEG's play just fine with audio when I use Windows Media Player on my computer, but 4 out of 5 transcoded MPEG's don't play audio on the MVP.

Should I use a different transcoder to MPEG or is this a problem with the MVP?

I'm guessing they either have AC3 audio or PCM, instead of the more common MPEG1-Layer2 audio?

If you still have the original VOBs, you can use a combination of Jeff's VideoArchive DVD2MPEG and daemon tools to convert to mpeg with normal mpeg audio that the MVP can play. It will leave the video untouched.
3x MVPs (not used anymore)
XBMC
Hauppauge 150 via SVideo
Comcast Digital Cable
Motorola HD Cable box channel changed via Firewire
Vista Home Premium with RDP hack
AMD Athalon 64 5000+
340gig sata, plus 80SATA+3x160IDE Drives in XP machine for storage.

That seems plausible, except that I did the same process for all the files and 1 of the 5 actually worked. Is there a way you can find out what the audio layer is in an MPEG file?

I do still have the original VOB's so I'll give that a try. I briefly looked at the documentation for Jeff's Video archive and that seems like a lot more work than other MPEG converts but I'll see if I can get it to work.

Utilities like gspot should tell you.

Basically it is a 3 step process,

1) split the mpeg into audio and video
2) re-encode the audio into mpeg audio
3) rejoin the 2 streams

Some DVD files are already mpeg, so they might work as is. Mpeg is 2 channel only.

I think most DVD player software for PCs have a show info while playing that might tell you the audio stream.
