Apologies in advance as this is probably a stupid question, but, for watching 720p material (that obviously isn’t interlaced), do I actually need to apply a deinterlacing filter in eg Purevideo for watching on a plasma screen?

Am I right in saying that plasma screens are not interlaced displays or have I missed something here?

You do not need to apply a deinterlacing filter to 720P material. Plasma screens are progressive.

Cool. Thanks!

I guess a follow up to that is if I am watching 720p material and purevideo is set to deinterlace, does that mean its not actually doing anything or will it be trying to deinterlace anyway? Would I get better results by turning it off?

no deinterlacing is removing the interlacing (interlacing is like doubling the picture line by line so 25 frames turns into 50 fields

then it is progressive each frame is displayed one at a time (meant to give you a sharper picture but that depends on the monitor in my opinion)

do a search on each on google wiki it will explain it more

This site explains interlacing and problems in the processing to de-interlace.

Not everything have to do with your display (output)that are progressive. It is a chain from how the original recording was created, stored, transmitted and received as you can read more about in this link. There is also the problem between different FPS and transmitting standard (PAL/SECAM/NTSC) if we talk about material that wasn't made with equipment for high definition resolution.

I am not an expert on this, but it seem that most material will be for a long time of lower quality then what HD could output.

Don't forget that also colour are compressed and PureVideo decompress differently YV12, YUY2 etc, so it could also play a part in the process from your computer's video card to screen/display.

If PureVideo is set to "Automatic", it will detect the video as progressive and it will not apply de-interlacing.
