How Much Storage on Your Network?

I recently bought a 320G external backup drive and new 500G recordings drive for my PVR.

Looking around my apartment just now I was a little surprised to see that I now have 1.3TB of available disk storage on my home network.

This was unthinkable just a few years ago. I thought I remembered seeing something a while back that said the entire Library of Congress would fit on a few TB's.

I'm sure this will feel a lot smaller when I start recording HD. Data always seems to catch up to the drives.

I have about 800 GB, I think, I will soon move well over 1TB when I redo my file server.

I've started looking at nas devices to indroduce into my network. Dont really want any more pcs and can't be bothered upgrading the hard disks in my existing machines.

Would love a four bay...gives me some room to expand!!!

Just a little over 2 TB here. It's kind of embarrasing when I sat down and figured up what is on my network at home.

Main GBPVR recording/server - 2x160gb drives
Client PC (living room) 1x160gb
Desktop/Work PC 1x160gb & 1x250gb
2 NSLU2 NAS devices both with 500gb each
my daughters pc - 1x120gb
my wife's work pc - 1x80gb

The NSLU2 (slugs ) run Debian and store most of the shows or movies that I keep for more than 1 viewing. That way the PC's aren't running all the time. I hope to eventually get my post processing set up to move the shows to the Slug as soon as the commercial removal is complete.

All these separate drives and locations can make it pretty hard to find a particular video. I really need some type of central database to index my files for playback.

and yeah, it is a bit embarrasing, thinking of my (parents) first 8086 XT with a flaming 20 MB HDD and a single 5 1/4 " floppy drive and now......
640 GB storage (server) 320 GB (desktop/gaming and other crap) 160GB Macbook, 80GB Powerbook and about 300GB laying around scatterd over various drives for instand need (like repairs etc)
I have the possibility to use a 6 bay Disk array but:
a) this thing makes a lot of noise
b) it's that old it will only accept 120GB (or smaller) drives
c) powerconsuption is to high

so I'll pass.

I have one 40G and two 20G hard drives sitting on my shelf. All work just fine. It's hard to believe but I will probably never use them again.

They will sit around until they seem so ridiculously small that they will be worthless.

Just over a TB here, more than half storing my music collection, the rest for recordings that i really don't keep, just watch and delete.

On main recording rig just over 2,5 TB (see signature) Actually, there is 2,9TB in the machine, but the 400GB goes to the RAID-5 parity.

Moved from several stand alone disks to RAID-5 which has made life quite a lot easier. Now I don't have to move recordings around to whatever disk has a little breathing room... A nice thing was the Online Capacity Expansion. I added another 400GB a couple of month ago, and that was just added to the volume. Took almost 24 hours for it to complete rewriting the array, but it was working just fine (accessable) meanwhile. Nice.

Got a few other machines in my home 'office' as well.

Most of the above holds some kind of mpg-stash whereever there is room...

And still I seem to struggle for space sometimes :eek: . Just goes to show that whatever the storage volume you've got, you can always use more...
