Hi,

Can anyone recommend any reasonably cheap, easy to use NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices which have their own, preferably web-based torrent clients?

Cheers

I have been toying with the idea of turning an old xbox into a NAS for some time...

I reckon I could do it for about $200 if I shopped around. Might be worth thinking about.

I use an NSLU2 for just this purpose. See this http://www.cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/

I have a 500GB Mybook USB drive attached which holds the Debian Kernel. This wasn't the simplest item to set up but it works really well. I use a program called rtorrent as my client, screen to keep it running all the time and yahoo pipes to manage RSS feeds. It has worked well as a backup to GBpvr when I have mucked around with it and broken something.Big Grin

No. Rtorrent is a command line only client which run sunder linux. It is controlled in a terminal window on my Windows pc using puTTy.

Here is how it works. I have a Samba share on my network called Torrents. Rtorrent watches this folder. Any torrent file I dump into this folder starts automatically on the NAS. I can shut my pc off, doesn't matter. The NSLU2 takes care of all the downloading etc.

My speeds aren't that great but it's not a big issue since the Slug (NSLU2) is silent and runs all the time. I did a rough draft of how this works and posted it here http://dgeezer.wordpress.com/. I don't think sub wants this to turn into a torrent discussion siteSmile

not to ask too many more questions, but how does rtorrent work in relation to share ratios etc if you are not stopping the torrent at some stage (just more seeing the video complete on your samba share in windows)

Cheers

It uses a config file and one of the settings is to keep the torrent open until seeded to 200% then it stops that torrent. I don't use it that much, but I seem to keep a good ratio. I keep it throttled down to only upload and download at about half of my connection speed so it doesn't lock us out of normal web usage.

Pre-determined torrent seed, thats cool - this pc-less thing seems like the way to go.

Yeah, I find that Azereus kills my connection, and also crashes my router if I get too many connects.

Azereus actually works fine, but I find that some sites won't connect when I am using it - I guess it's quite a TCP/IP heavy application

Does the TCP optimizer matter it it's cable or DSL?

My computers sometime randomly lose their connection the the router, and doing a repair on the connection helps to fix - any ideas on how to fix that (it can be just with an idle pc, or under load)

Thanks
