Is there some way to emulate the on-the-fly conversion used by MediaMVP software? Perhaps a way to use the Hauppauge transcoding dlls instead of ffmpeg?

The MediaMVP software is better at playing non-MPEG movies. The difference is that GBPVR converts the file on the fly to disk which means that you cannot jump past where it has got to transcoding the file. MediaMVP also converts on the fly, but streams it so you can jump straight to the end of the movie and back again, and also remembers where you were for each movie.

GBPVR is fine for watching movies, but not having fast-forward/skipping is limiting.

I'm using:

MediaMVP 2.5.0.3362
PVRX 1.0.0.0

in config, set <MVPTranscodeUsingFFmpeg>false</MVPTranscodeUsingFFmpeg>
and it will use the hauppauge software if it's installed and working properly..
it does do a very nice job transcoding, get the newest ver. as they have improved it alot lately..[comes with MVP software]
[subs work and everything]

Thanks for the quick response, but that was one of the first things I tried. GBPVR still transcodes to a temporary file on disk and cannot skip beyond what it has already transcoded. I've got the latest versions of both GBPVR and MediaMVP (GBPVR v1.0.16, and MVP setup 3.3.25032. Sorry - I posted the version numbers from the exe files). From reading the Wiki, when you disable ffmpeg in the config it uses Trans2MVP.exe in the GBPVR folder, not the Hauppauge software itself. This Trans2MVP is based on how Hauppauge used to do its transcoding (the version of Trans2MVP installed with the latest release of GBPVR was created in 2005). To explain what I mean about how the MediaMVP software now handles, say, a WMV or DivX movie, the number buttons on the remote represent 1/10 of the movie - you press 5 you go straight to the middle - and I mean straight to the middle, not wait quarter of an hour while the transcoder does its business. I think this must be a new feature because all the old posts I've read talk about the lack of ff/skip being an inherent weakness of a MediaMVP - but not any more.

then i bet it's doubtfull that it ever will, cuz to do that, you need communication between the player [in this case gb] and the transcoder...

unless he rewrites the code to access the transcoder...
sounds like a streaming setup like vlc does...vastly different than the usual way to transcode...
i'll see what i can see about access with newest versions..
maybe they give cmd help..

yea, it's using an Async push mode filter setup..sweet...
i think i've found an alternative, we'll see if it produces anything workable..
it lets me specify server and port to send to so i'll see if a graph can't be made to feed it to the mvp...
from what i understand, the mvp just plays anything pushed to the right port..
i'm hoping the access cmds work somehow...Smile [ff/rw]
the filter does allow you to render to net and skip around, so keeping fingers crossed..

hmmm, maybe i find which haupp. filter does same thing...
[might be easier..lol]

Easy boys... you'll put me out of business (ZProcess) Big Grin

The only way for either GB-PVR or Hauppauge to play a non-mpeg file is for transcoding.

If the Hauppauge software allows for skipping beyond what should be the end of file, then indeed, that would be magic.

I'm dying to check this out...

WOW! I can't believe it. It works...

OK. I still don't like the interface. The MVP still seems a little sluggish, and sometimes when I click nothing happens, and then sometimes there's a delay...

But, wow, fast forwarding... I'm definitely gonna look into this.

So pBS, what were you saying?

This sounded like a cool idea, I never even knew it existed however I noticed two problems. The main one is didn't work (it might be a Vista thing)

Code:
11:09:37.711    ERROR    MainConcept (Hauppauge) MPEG Encoder not found. This is normally installed with the Hauppauge MediaMVP software, and is required to transcode a video file.

The only Hauppauge one I have is the HCW MPEG-2 Video Decoder.

and the second problem is the Trans2MVP.exe-native*.log are not in the logs folder so I almost missed diagnosing it.

Afaik the mainconcept was/is installed with the haup-sw, although I don't know if they still use it. I guess sub hasn't updated/tried the trans2mvp.exe for a long time.
