In my never ending HTPC problems - blew up my P4, now blew up my new AMD 3800 mobo, currently working on a slightly crippled HTPC Sad - I have discovered that VLC will mess up your power schemes. To fix this problem do not select disable screen saver in VLC. If you do, VLC will reset your power scheme to something arbitarary - though I have a feeling that it'll set it to whatever scheme you had when VLC was first installed.

Hope it saves someone some headaches on any new installs.

Where is this setting in VLC? Or is it an install option?

It's in preferences-->video-->enable advanced options (bottom left)-->disable screen saver

I'm not sure if enable advanced options is needed, but you'll get it for sure this way.

Cool, I had that turned on.

My system was on 24/7 but I might look at making it drop to standby, not so much for the power requirements, but more so parts have a chance to cool down a bit and stop some wear and tear on the hard drives.
