when i start playing something, i get a message from my firewall that the program is trying to access the internet. this is just a video file so there's no reason for it to be trying to access anything. is this some kind of call home or auto update feature? I would like to turn this off. I can block internet access through the firewall but that would also mean no net radio which is something I would like to have.

The software tries to access 72.36.201.130 which is the GB-PVR site. I do not want this to happen and honestly would rather use a different package than have call home software on my machine.

Can anyone assist with this?

Hmm - I thought gbpvr only caused firewall alerts because it runs as a server/client set up...

Are you running any plugins that check for updates?

Maybe a quick fix would be to edit your hosts file and redirect 72.36.201.130 to 127.0.0.1? - Not sure if you can redirect an ip with this method though...

There is no communication back to the GB-PVR server or any other home server.

The only network communication that I'm aware of is the following (none calls home)
- Net Radio (to station)
- Schedules Direct EPG (to TMS/zap2it server)
- CT TV Listing epg sources (to CT Listings server)
- GBPVR.exe/PVRX2.exe communication to GBPVRRecordingService.exe (TCP/IP to same machine)
- MVP clients running on the same network (server listens, MVP initiates inbound communication)
- GBPVR.exe/PVRX2.exe clients you may have installed on other machines. (server listens, client machine initiates inbound communication)
- Various plugins, like Weather plugin scrape info off websites.

There is no communication back to this server, so I'm surprised your filewall would report this. What port number was the communication for? I'm sure its a mistake of your firewall software, but if you'd like to record the network access in Ethereal or Wireshark, then post it, I'm sure a few people could tell you what is happening.

I've just tried playing a recording with both the old GB-PVR app. and PVRX2 and capturing all network traffic with Ethereal. There's nothing showing for any access to the GB-PVR home site.

Cheers,
Brian

My firewall, Zonealarm, does the same everytime I try to do something with GBPVR. I put it down to the firewall and ignore it.

What address is it trying to talk to. The only network activity I see on mine is the internal stuff from the recording service to the user interface and that all seems to be to localhost.

The OP says his is talking to this web site and I've never seen that, nor would I expect to.

Some plugins check to see if there are updates. Weather does this, and a few others.

As martin says above, Zonealarm does this because its seeing the traffic between PVRX2.exe and GBPVRRecordingService.exe on the same machine. Its not seeing any traffic going outside the machine.
