I am new to HTPC stuff but need to know if this is possible. I assume I can get things to work on a pure WindowsMCE box but want to avoid that and instead use gbpvr or other type software (mediaportal etc).

Assume I am running a PC with gbpvr which records my TV shows. I assume these will be saved as MPEG-2 (what the hardware encoder card does) in .mpg extension.

I have XBOX360 networked into the home network (and the HTPC is also networked and able to share the appropriate folder with xbox) and want to be able to play the saved videos on the xbox. Xbox support says that it supports .avi, .mp4, and .wmv to play via media blade by using WMP V11 media sharing.

Can gbpvr (or via plugin) save in a compatible format, or automatically convert into the format readable to the xbox?

I have tested Beyond TV and it had the capability to automatically convert (in the background) to .avi and this worked.

Can you tell me if this is possible and if so, how?

Thanks

(If it won't work automatically, I guess the only option is a third-party recoder which I would have to run scheduled every night to convert over to .avi or wmv perhaps tveristy??)

PS I do not want to run gbpvr on the xbox which seemed to be all I could find in questions on this subject in past posts.

Thanks!

GB-PVR can do what you want (maybe not natively, I've never used the transcode option). Take a look at the transcoding options in the Config.

http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Config/Processing

If you want the conversion to start immediately, set the time(s) to ASAP.

The conversion profiles are read from the config.xml file. It is possible to add and modify these to suit your needs.

Yep. Trancode like the others mentioned, and just map your xbox360 to the drive. I do this with my xbox w/ xbmc.

can you point me to documentation on the config.xml so I can play with the encoding settings? I do not like the default quality level and hope to tweak higher.

Also, are there good DOS prompt transcoders recommended so I could run with postprocessing.bat

I don't know of any links to documentation but that variable to tweak is qscale. a lower value = higher quality. google for ffmpeg qscale for more info.

you might be able to run stattik's bat file with postprocessing, i'm not 100% sure but it makes nice xvid files using mencoder.

btw: gbpvr will look for an avi file if it can't find the mpeg so the entry will be retained in the recordings database if you have an avi file and remove the mpeg file.
