I'm not sure if it's PCMagazine or PC World magazine but they had a list of the best "free" software around. In the video section they listed MythTV and that's it. I was like "hold up, you forgot GBPVR!"

I would like to protest. :p

I'm a big linux fan and everything, but getting this video stuff to work is bad enough on its own, but when you also have to battle bad linux or unavailable linux drivers and codec it's hell. That's why I went with GBPVR instead of any of the linux variants.

That kind of thing is why people don't read PC Magazine.
I bet Michael Bay uses GBPVR because it's awesome:

I read it, because I have a free subscription, but most of their editors/writers are just overpaid windbags...

They do occasionally have a good review in them though.

Yeah, PC Magazine isn't what it used to be. It used to be much more technical and thorough in it's reviews and analysis - it's issues are about one-third the size they were when I first started getting it. A significant portion of it is devoted to consumer electronics too vs it's namesake. I subscribed to it for 17 years but finally and sadly let my subscription lapse this year. Sad

Thank goodness for Make magazine! http://www.makezine.com Smile

Agreed! It seems like I used to barely finish one PC Mag before the next one came in the mail. I bought one at the airport the other day and read it cover to cover before the plane took off. At $7.00 a pop at the newstands it should really take more than 10 minutes to read.

The consumer electronics reviews are not the worst of it. PC Mag has been reviewing cars for the last year or so. WTF??? There are like three decent computer magazines left and probably 1000 car magazines.

Some of the "reviews" that they post are glorified paragraphs that look like they were cut and pasted from the manufacturers web site.

The PC Mag website is a nightmare that looks like it was put together in 1997 (it probably was). Ironic that a magazine that has so many articles on pop-up blockers actually serves pop-ups on it's own site.

I have really been looking around for a computer magazine that is more centered around things I can do with the hardware that I own rather than reviews for more hardware I can buy.

There is a solution that would fix PC Mag quickly. Make Dvorak editor-in-chief. I still enjoy his columns.

I get PC World and Maximum PC and for the most part, enjoy them both. But one thing I noticed as I've gotten older is that the print keeps getting smaller so that they can fit more advertisements in a smaller magazine.Smile

LOL... I know, when they added the Auto column is when I decided I wouldn't renew.

Couldn't agree more. They used to really set a standard for comprehensive testing and review, but no longer.

Actually, it was Dvorak's column that made me hang on as long as I did.

I miss my old PC Magazine and wish there was an alternate like the mag of old. Remember when it was exciting to see what their new utility for the month would be? Smile

I don't think I've bought a computer magazine since Micro Cornucopia went belly up.
Other than those with articles about me in them :o
