I've just brought a 500gig western Digital Green Power for 62.14 (UK pounds). It not the cheapest but at idle i can't here it at all. And apparently it uses about 3 watts less then other 3.5" hard drives. Which when you run your HTPC on a 60 Watt fanless power supply is handy.

Since one got linked, I'll go ahead and say it for people who may not know: you generally don't want to use an external drive as much as you would an internal. The drives can get hot and die within months if used excessively because the cases often don't ventilate well. If it has a good case, that's a different story.

I caught a deal on a Maxtor/Seagate 500gb external last month for $55 with tax. I had it out of the case and the warranty voided within half an hour of driving home. Smile Along with the drive for cheap but voiding the warranty, bonus of doing that is I got to toss my old 120gb into the case to now have that as an external.
I bet Michael Bay uses GBPVR because it's awesome:
