If so, what brand/type/configuration?

I'm looking at adding a 1Tb NAS running 100/1000 RJ-45 (Buffalo or Fantom) device to my network. I was thinking for backup purposes, but I wonder if 1Gb would be fast enough for media storage/streaming?

Thoughts?

I got a couple of cheap landrive boxes that take an IDE drive. I put an old 320gb drive in each. They are very very slow, especially writing to them. They will stream SD moderately well. I just use them for central backups now and as a common dumping ground for stuff to be available around the house.
I don't think I'm getting anything close to 100mb/s from them - but they were cheap things.

Mirrored Raid 5? Don't see it as an option. Did you hack it?

NSLU2 with two USB HD's. Slow as all getup, but works OK ... and it's quiet.

FreeNas as was mentioned is also good. That's a bit more work than just running to a store and getting a NAS but if you're up to it that's cool.

I was reading about that.
Can you map a GBPVR machine to it & use it as a liveTV share?

I've not attempted it, but I have worked extensively with linux. You could probably configure Samba (from Windows SMB - server message block protocol aka windows file sharing) on FreeNAS for that. NFS is probably another option but you need a plugin or something for Windows for that.
