Hey guys,

I have been using GBPVR for years now and I love it. I just closed on a new house and am trying to set up an LCD HDTV in my bedroom, which is one floor above my office. My computer will be in the office.

One of the nicest things about my new house is that I finally have QAM, so I can record HD programs. Now, I want to stream those recordings to the TV in my bedroom over the wireless-N network. As far as I can tell, I have a few options, but none of them seem like slam dunks. Here is what I've come up with:

1. Additional Computer.
I could build another computer and keep it in the room. I figure this would probably cost around $300-400 in order to have enough horsepower to play HD video.

2. Network Media Player.
I've been looking at these alot lately, and each one has its own drawbacks. The D-Link products require a Viiv processor and aren't available in wireless N. The Linksys products do come in N, but require Windows Media Center and Vista (don't use either). The netgear lineup looks the most promising- it has wireless N and works with XP. I just don't know if it plays all of GBPVRs formats. It costs $300. EDIT: The netgear is only G, not N. So there goes that idea.

3. Monitor Mirroring
This setup would be the most exciting, but the most difficult. It would require me to run wires through the wall to hook up my TV directly to my computer. I would need to use a USB KVM extender at least, and either run a monitor cable, buy a USB graphics adapter for $150, or convert the monitor to component with a $100 converter and run 5 rca-style wires. Total cost would be anywhere from $100-$250 for all of the wires and supplies, but it would take days and days of my time, and I've never done anything like it before. My room is diretly above my office though, so it is a possibility.

4. Laptop:
Just hook up my laptop to the tv when I want to watch something. This is the least elegant but the easiest since I already have all of the necessary cables.

I'm trying to make my new room really nice, so I'm installing the LCD flush on the wall and hiding all of the wires in the wall. I really want to keep it clean no matter what I do, so the laptop and desktop solutions kind of go against that feeling. I think I can wire up a network media player to look nice though.

Any thoughts? I really don't want to spend more than $300, and would prefer to spend less than that.

I would suggest the Popcornhour A-100N When it is released. the A-100 will also support N via USB dongle once syabas gets the drivers working porperly.

Whats great is there is a working GBPVR client that runs on this device. You can learn more in the NMT section of this forum as well.

More info about the NMT/Popcornhour can be found here:

The PopcornHour should be on your short-list but you should strongly consider running network cable also. Since you're considering running component cables it sounds like a network cable is a possibility too, and one network cable is much simpler. Depending on your home wiring, you might even be able to piggyback off your phone lines. Many new homes are built with cat5e for their phone wiring and only 4 of it's 8 wires are necessary for 100Mb ethernet.

Wireless video is often a challenge just for standard definition and it's much lower bandwidth that HD. Even the most brief moment of interruption will cause a streaming connection to be lost. No big deal if you're surfing the net and have to click a link twice, but it's a big deal if you have to restart a video multiple times. A microwave, a neighbor's cordless phone or wireless network can easily introduce hiccups that will make you crazy.

Just my two cents...

Thanks for the tips guys. I'm looking into the popcornhour as we speak- I love the prospect of having the gbpvr interface.

I just feel like if I was running an ethernet cable anyway, I would just plug right into the computer. There is a device made that connects your monitor to your computer through usb, and there is a device that converts usb to ethernet for long runs. So i could run one ethernet cable and put a hub at the tv end, plugging in the tv, the mouse, and maybe a keyboard. So its definitely an option. I like that I wouldn't have to worry about firmware, file formats, etc. And the possibility of gaming (but I would have to run a separate monitor cable since the usb>monitor device isn't fast enough for gaming).

This device is here: http://sewelldirect.com/USB-to-DVI-Exter...o-Card.asp
And I already bought a KVM usb to ethernet device since it was $15 and I thought I could find a use for it somewhere.

But, I would still prefer to go the wireless route simply because it would require so much less work, and alot less spackling, sanding, and painting.

monoprice.com sells DVI-HDMI cables for up to 50ft. Did you look into that?

Cool, nice site. I would then have to run an HDMI and an ethernet cable (for usb). I'll have to see how the walls line up- if its a straight shot down then that wouldnt be so bad.

Then I could even play games! I know, major dork.

here's a problem...
Quote:DVD playing
To use this adapter to view video like from a DVD:
Dual Core CPU at 2.0 GHz processor clock needed
The screen's resolution must be set to 800x600 with 16 bit color
from the usb adapters site...
it's a technical limitation of usb devices...there just isn't enough bandwidth for hd video....just barely enough for sd video...and no accelleration at all..
[and 16 bit color will look really bad on lcd!]

yea, best bet is popcorn hour or long hdmi cable w/rf remote..
pch does allow some other nice things too tho...Smile

Yeah, was gonna say. Hook up the LCD as a second monitor in clone mode with a DVI or HDMI cable, or component with adapter depending on connectors and video card. And then KVM switches or some other dual-mouse setup aside, use a radio-frequency type remote control instead of infrared so the signal can go through walls.
I bet Michael Bay uses GBPVR because it's awesome:

Thanks for all the insight guys. I just purchased and mounted the tv today. Ended up going with a 42" plasma- good sale. The mounting process took so much longer than I expected, and all I ran was a coax and electricity. I can only imagine how much work it will be to run any cable between two floors.

I'm definitely going with a wireless solution. I'll still have to run the connection from the device to the tv through the wall, but it won't be nearly as bad as running the HDMI.

That popcornhour device looks interesting. I haven't had much time to look into it, but its definitely between a device like that and a new small form factor htpc.

Once you set everything up, please share with us the details of your solution and, most importantly, how it is working for you.
