I've had this problem with stuttering because of the DirectX 9.0c version of quartz.dll since at least 2004. Is there really no official fix for this totally annoying problem? I've used the downgrading to 9.0b fix for some time but Windows Update seems to pop a buggy quartz.dll back all the time.

I've seen some ancient links to a hotfix but that was not for my Swedish XP so I could not use that. This is THE most annoying bug of all time in Windows for me. And it must be causing lots of people problems. At least all using hardware decoding. I've seen this issue pop up in forums all over the internet.
No real fix seen though.

The Microsoft hotfix seems to work for some people but definitely not for me. After having Windows Update "upgrade" it several times on me, I finally disabled the particular patch on the Windows Update screen and my old 9b quartz.dll has been left alone for a while.

It does seem remarkable that this problem persists. after all this time but it does.

Found this hotfix. Is this what you refer to?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919071

I cannot install it since my language is not compatible for this hotfix. Is that a drag...

Maybe if I tried to change the language settings...?

yeah, it's that fix. changing language settings wont help you much Wink
there are only 2 ways to get that fix:
1. contact microsoft support & tell them you have that behaviour & need he fix for your system language.
2. serch the web for the hotfix. the guys at thehotfixshare.net are collecting every patch that microsoft has provided to someone on request but does not make it available for download (don't ask me why microsoft behaves so). up to now they have the following languages available: KOR / RUS / DEU / NLD / CSY

Same experience for me as wtg. After much fussing with decoders and renderers and an upgraded video card, it all came back to 9.0b for me. I also found the update continually replacing it, so disable that update. I think it's called Security Fix for DirectX or something like that.

Searched the net for a swedish version of KB919071 but there is none.
So I resorted to the old replacer method to replace the quartz.dll.
Have set Windows update to "Ask" mode also.

"Someone" should really report this to Microsoft. It is a serious bug. Should really hamper their MCE product as well, or do then not support hardware decoding in MCE?

there is a way to disable one particular hotfix from ever beeing installed again. that does not help when m$ publishes another patch including yet another version of quartz.dll but may hey help you meanwhile.

let me translate "someone":

K.S. Wrote:1. contact microsoft support & tell them you have that behaviour & need he fix for your system language.

let's get real. m$ has some reasons not to publish that fix for every language & only provide it at request (most likely it's only tested for production status in english versions, all other version will likely be some beta status Wink)
given the fact that XP is near to the "watch the daisys grow"-status i guess the major horse power is invested in vista. "hasta la vista XP!"
or as dilbert whould say: "they've stopped beeting their dead horse" http://dilbert.com/fast/2007-12-18/

This is a problem severe enough to give M$ bad credit. I've read so many posts about people having tested everything including new hardware just to finally find out about this problem. What about those that just gave up and saying M$ is crap... So it should be properly fixed for all languages and distributed as a Windows update IMHO. Probably it is a really easy fix. They have already fixed it once in the hotfix - and then forgotten about the fix in later updates.

And what language correlation is there to a dll file deep down in a DirectShow filter function? Can't be much if any.

In general though I agree with you that they need to test the hotfix for every language version.

you're barking up the wrong tree Wink
i do agree about it being severe, but i don't see it coming. hell, m$ has only prolonged XP availability because of massive requests (from industry sides). there's no money to gain for them by providing a fix for a minority. HTPCs are a minority, take a look at the 780G drivers issues gazoo has to get HA. ATI/AMD struggles to make a living & also don't improve their drivers for XP...

Indeed Smile

Although I think XP will live on for some time still. Vista has not been a success and I have given it the booty after numerous problems, mostly because of bad driver support (read Nvidia). Might be better now but I don't feel any need whatsover to go down the Vista route again. XP does it's job too well and performance wise it is better than Vista.

I will not change OS until Windows 7 appears or I am forced to. If it is better that is...
