Not really a gb-pvr support question but rather a codec question

Recently, I've been noticing my quartz.dll (version b which fixes my stutter) is getting replaced with version c ALL THE TIME.

I used the replacer from the wiki, and it replaces, (even defeating the 'can't change a system file' warning) and it's fine till some other event.

Maybe Windows Update is detecting a upgrade is available and overwrites, but I'm pretty sure that the file is registered to be the 'correct' version even though I guess it is older...

Anyone know of a better way to replace with an older file and make it stick?

I haven't fooled around with my quartz.dll (although I should; I noticed some HD frame drops last night after thinking my problems were solved by VMR9 FSE). But I do remember that the library is involved in a number of M$ security updates, in which case I can easily imagine Windows Update wiping yours out.

Anything similar to this?

Windows Update caused this problem for me. (I too need 9.0b for smooth playback.) There is a MS security update for DirectX that changes the quartz.dll to (IIRC) an October 2007 date. In Windows Update, you can set this update to never install. I don't remember exactly how, but it is pretty easy when you get into the list of updates; you may have to click Custom to see them. This fixed it for me.

Thanks all. Yeah, I guess when you see new updates are available, you can list which ones you want. When you uncheck any of the updates, Windows asks if you ever wanna be bothered by it again...

It's probably one of the updates that keeps wanting to download, but iuts just calls itself an imortant security update rather than KB????? etc...

IIRC it mentions DirectX in the description, or at least something that would lead you (or at least me) to think it might affect the quartz.dll.

Good luck.

Would it be sufficient to mark quartz.dll as read-only? I don't know if that would prevent the update from wiping it out.

Well it was quite easy for me to get it worked out. The guys were right, and I wasn't looking very closely.

I don't have my Windows Update to 'Update Automatically', but rather 'notify when updates available'. I'm told there's a new update. I click 'Custom' as opposed to 'Express' and the update is called a 'Important Security for XP'. In the Custom screen I can read more about what it is I'm updating and sure enough it's for 'DirectShow'...

I uncheck that update and click OK. A popup asks me whether I'm sure I don't want to notified again, I say yes,...

...and then Quartz version b sticks (until the next update)

Wait; you say "I don't want to be notified again" and it's still going to overwrite it the next time? That doesn't seem right.

I think he means until there is another update that would mess with the quarts dll, not the update he just turned off...
