I understand Freesat was launched today transmitting signals on Astra 2D and an EPG on Eurobird 1.

When I scan Astra 2A, 2B , 2D my capture device only lists what I think are BSKYB channels. From reading the forum I think other people have managed to receive Freesat OK. Could anyone help? I'm new to gbpvr.

Thanks

NB For now I have gone back to vista 32 premium.

Hi BigB,

The bulk of the channels are existing FTA (free to air) channels that are also used by Sky boxes (e.g. all the BBCs, ITVs etc). The only real difference is that there's a FTA version of Channel 4 that you can pick up (look on the digital spy forum and you'll find the details) and the ITV HD test channel, which is proving a right sod for me to get to work with GBPVR (I have another thread going about that). All others you can get fine on a normal DVB-S card which your scan should have picked up.

I dont use an EPG from the DVB stream, I get it via XMLTV and the Radiotimes so have no idea how the freesat or Sky EPGs work with GBPVR. With the XMLTV RT solution you get 14 days full EPG.

The ITV HD works on my system with no sound but I think the engineers are still playing around.

On the subject of Freesat:

My understanding was that using sky without a subscription (i.e. just FTA stuff) was freesat, however on the radio this morning they said the BBC & ITV's offering was seperate (ITV don't want sky carry to carry ITV HD), but they a both confusingly called freesat...

Does anyone one have any clarification on this??

Apologies for dragging this off topic...

Sky Freeview has been around for quite some time. this is a non subscription service for "Free to air" ie:BBC, ITV etc and "Free to view" ie: C4 C5 More4 etc.
The Free to view channels still need a card as they are encrypted but there is a one off payement 20 quid I think.

The new Freesat is a joint BBC ITV venture with all the channels Free to air.
Still uses the same transponders but with its own EPG.
The encryption has been removed from the new Freesat channels hence we can now get C4, More4 and E4 with new channels being added this year.

Was about to post most of the above myself but Dabbs saved me doing so! Understand channel 5 is one of the channels coming later this year. Other than ITV HD the rest will be the usual garbage I assume!

And v annoyingly for me, apparantly my block of flats still has the old sky system from about 8 years ago, and can't pick up anything on Astra 2D so I'm missing out Sad

lol - Yep although there seems to be very little of decent quality on ITV these days...

Anyway, back to the scheduled programming....

Thanks for the help.

I am fiddling around with scan-1.cache, transfering vales from lyngsat, without much sucess yet. I will copy in the data in dabbs reply to see if I can find a working channel to check my set-up. I'm looking for BBC HD and BBC North West for now.

BTW the new freesat service also transmits a EPG on Eurobird 1, though I have no idea whether it can be used in gbpvr.

More info can be found here http://www.astra2d.com/freesat.htm

Thanks

Thanks to Dabbs for the cache settings above I have got the ITV HD channel to work! The unenctrypted C4 channel is labled something else (a number in the 8000s) and will come up as that during a scan. Look on the digitalspy forums and there's a thread or 2 there about it. Or just add the lines from Dabbs above into the cache file in the BDA folder and then go to the map digital channels section and select the entries you've just added - easier than doing a full scan!
