I'm trying out gbpvr on my windows xp sp3 pc. I have an ATI 550 pro analog card and I am using cable for my source. My sound card is a creative x-fi.

My issue with sound is that I am getting a loud background hiss and sometimes squeal. When I record it also shows up in the recording. I have had this problem with other pvr software, but I have not had it with it SageTV or MediaPortal. It comes out clean and sharp with those two programs. With those two I leave the decoder settings on auto, and even if I change those settings, the sound still comes out sharp and clear.

With gbpvr I have tried various settings in the mpeg2 decoder settings (for source) doesn't seem to make much of a difference. But when I choose AC3 for a decoder, the squeal goes away, but not the hiss. Any ideas what I should try. I have looked though the wiki, and on line, but I haven't found anything that explains in details the various decoders and renders and what they do.

I also noticed that when I configure my card under Capture Sources, there is a quaility profile settings. If I click edit I get choices for audio bit rate and and audio sample rate. Do I mess with these or just leave them alone to reflect the predefined quality setting. Mine is currently set to High Quality.

If default settings don't work, do I just select various ones from the various drop down boxes until I'm satisfied with the audio quaility, or is there a rhyme and reason to this. If anyone knows any links to guides or such that explain this stuff well, could you give me a link?

Thanks in advance!

I dont have any guide for you, but if it works in any other app, then I'm sure it'll come down to the combination of audio decoder and audio render.

To be sure though, you can try working out whether its a playback or capture problem by playing a recording made in one of these other apps in GB-PVR. ie if it doesnt hiss in the original app, but does in GB-PVR, then its a decoder/renderer thing. If it doesnt hiss in GB-PVR, then it sounds like a capture problem.

You can ignore these - these settings dont do any with your card. You just get whatever the defaults are in your drivers. If the defaults for your device are the cause of the problem, you'd need to find a way to change the defaults.
