This is not a GBPVR post but thought the folks here may be interested.
There is a thriving open source project some of you may have heard of that has developed alternative firmware for most Canon digicams made in the last 1-4 years.
The project is called CHDK
I have not been this wired over a project since I first installed GBPVR.
Once you get the firmware installed (easy) you can download scripts which give various kinds of added functionality to the camera.
There are several intervelometers which allow you to make time lapse movies. There is a motion sensor that people are using to take really cool photos of wild animals (could also be used as a security cam). Shutter speeds of less than 1/10,000 of a second are possible.
The software also allows your camera to run games and function as an e-book reader.
I have had nothing but Sony cameras for the last 10 years. I bought a Canon specifically for this project and I'm thrilled with it.
