and it it called by pvrx2 or the recording service?

I'm thinking about trying to get a s1 based standby working to let the hard drives spin down every so often.

So to get that working i need to shut down pvrx2 to get the windows screen saver to take effect. And so on wake up it would be nice if I could restart pvrx2.

well, first off wake.cmd isn't called by gbpvr...it's called by another app that senses when suspends..you could use anything...gbpvrwake.exe, hibernate trigger, script, etc...
XP? or Vista?

second, getting hard drives to spin down shouldn't need to sleep pc...can do that separately in power options just for hard drives...Smile

and third, screen saver coming on has nothing to do with system sleep...separate timers...
[ok, display snooze is part of overall system sleep timer] unless you just want it to come on when going into standby..[not really seeing the point]

can't do S3? fans won't go off in S1...S1 is more like 'low' power instead of turning anything off..might be better off with hibernate...

This was never called by any of the core components. There was a seperate utility that could be run though, called GBPVRWake.exe, that would run wake.cmd when it detected the machine retuirning from standby.

XP. I'll have a look for the gbpvr wake.

yeah the've been set, but I've never felt the system drive to be anything other than hot. Perhaps it's paging, perhaps there's something else on there keeping it spinning.

Yep I used to try s3, and found it unstable on the mobo, failure to go down properly, tuners not coming back up. S1 it seems to go down into quite nicely, and then I know the tuners are getting a break and so it the hard drives, also the cpu cools down a bit as well.

I've observed that if screen saver doesn't come on, then standby/sleep doesn't take effect as well. The only time I can get this to happen is when I shut down pvrx2.

So if you know how I can get standby without turning off pvrx2 then I'll be all ears.

the nce standby tool is a good start (works on xp) for troubleshooting hardware sleep problems.

softare problems need some experimenting. best (if you can spare the time!) is to start with a clean install and then add yous apps one at a time until you find the one thats interfering with windows own sleep functions.

s3 although the most 'user friendly' for gpvr is VERY hardware dependent - some mobos just don't get it right. some video cards won't restart correctly (you can try different drivers sometimes) and some tuner or PCI cards won't restart correctly - for this you can sometimes use the devcon command line utility to run a batch file called by gbpvrwake (or another external app) that disables and reenables cards on resume

For what its worth, this is what I do :-

Set windows screensaver settings as follows :-
1. Disable screen saver
2. Set monitor to turn off after 5 minutes
3. Set computer to hibernate after 15 minutes.

With PVRX2 running, the screensaver settings will not kick in, so when im watching TV the monitor never turns off and the pc never goes to standby.

When I walk away from the machine, I just exit the PVRX2 application.

After 5 minutes the screen goes off, after a further 15 minutes the pc goes to standby.

If I have a recording scheduled, the PC will automatically wake from hibernate, make the recording, then 15 minutes after it stops will go back into hibernate again.

I use a remote control and eventghost to control GBPVR, so all of this is done from the comfort of the couch.

To keep the hard disks cool, I have attached a 12V fan by the drive so create airflow, I attached a 2W 100R resistor to the fan to slow it right down, its inaudable but creating enough air flow to keep the drive just luke warm.

If you are already using MST you could also try this:

http://www.degroeneknop.nl/forum/index.p...t.html#new

Also try the beta version of MST here:

http://www.degroeneknop.nl/forum/index.php/topic,4555.0

It has new functionality to tweak how much activity prevents sleep and shows if a program is preventing sleep by requiring the system or the monitor.

The debug tab contains a new checkbox "Wake monitor/TV at resume", this should prevent the black screen on resume on some HDMI connected TVs (often combined with ATI videocards). Please report success/failure!

blinking flip! that's a good addition too. I resorted to buying a new GFX card to fix that little annoyance...
