Card 1

model 01178: WinTV-HVR-1600 with NSTC/ATSC/QAM support, on-board IR receiver and blaster

Card 2

model 01101: WinTV-HVR-1600 MC board only with NSTC/ATSC/QAM support, without remote control, with FM radio

When I run only 'card 1' the hauppauge supplied remote works flawlesly all is happy in the world. When I run both cards the remote simply will not detect at all nothing nadda zipp zilch and zero.

Both cards are working just fine in that they are both able to record and encode and do what happy good cards do the only issue I have is regarding the remote control.

any ideas?

if its the hauppauge remote that plugs in the back of the card and uses ir.exe, and not a usb mce type remote then your stuck.
ir.exe won't run if it finds a hauppauge card with no ir hardware. I had this problem with three hvr1300s where one had no ir receiver and tried everything. theres a poor work around using devcon where you create a batch file to disable the non ir card, then launch ir.exe, then reenable the card. but it's a pita and not 100% effective. best to buy a usb mce remote...

thanks for the info if you happen to have a link for the partial solution you did find it would be great. I did fire off a quick email to there support but I'm not holding my breath.

you'll not get anything from hauppauge, other than it's a known problem - but they've known about it for at least two years!!
download devcon from here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311272 and stick it in c:windows.
then look in device manager for the device id of the non IR card,
then make a batch (actually mine was .cmd - can't remember why)file something like

Code:
echo off
DEVCON DISABLE "@PCI\VEN_14F1&DEV_8800&SUBSYS_96000070&REV_05\3&61AAA01&0&60"
START /b C:\STARTIR.BAT
DEVCON ENABLE "@PCI\VEN_14F1&DEV_8800&SUBSYS_96000070&REV_05\3&61AAA01&0&60"
exit cmd

also can't remember why I had startir.bat, rather than putting the commands in one batch file but startir.bat was

Code:
"C:\Program Files\WinTV\Ir.exe" /QUIET
(edit - actually I do remember. if you put i in one batch file it gets stuck waiting for ir.exe to finish before executing the next devcon. this way startir.bat will finish and pass back to the next devcon command.)

delete ir.exe from programs ->start and put the batch file in instead so it runs when you boot up. You'll also need to run it every time you restart ir.exe. This is one of the limitations that if ir.exe crashes it won't restart and you'll have to manually run the batch again.

i'm not a batch file expert but I think this was a "working" solution - you can maybe improve it, or alter it to suit your system (obviously the device id will be uniqueto you and need changing)

Like I said a 99p mce remote from ebay was a vastly improved solution!!

if anyone should happen upon this thread at a later date... the advice I just quoted is the correct answer.

In the case of the HVR-1600's the above disable enable method didn't actually work although the method does make sense and might work in other circumstances.

I spoke to soon about the method not working on the HVR-1600 series. It actually did work when I did it manually (probably have a line wrong somewhere in my bat).

To do this manually I opened the device manager and disabled the 1101. Now I ran the restartIR and then enabled the 1101 again. If you read the above description from fuzzweed you will see that this is exactly what he describes. Whats even stranger is that when I open the device manager and run the script it does exactly the same thing but for some reason doesn't get the same results.

If you should happen to run into this thread because of a search and you're thinking where did fuzzweed get the id "@PCI\VEN_14F1&DEV_8800&SUBSYS_96000070&REV_05\3&61AAA01&0&60" and how do you find yours... well I did the following

devcon find pci\*

you're going to see more information than you may have wanted but for every hauppauge there will be a line and process of elimination will probably help you out.

you might need to put a pause in the batch file after the first devcon and before running ir.exe to give the disabling a moment to complete.
something like this may work
google Wrote:For any MS-DOS or Windows version wit a TCP/IP client, PING can be used to delay execution for a number of seconds.
If specified (-w switch), PING will wait for a number of milliseconds between two PINGS before giving a time-out.

PING 1.1.1.1 -n 1 -w 60000 >NUL

will delay execution of the next command 60 seconds, provided 1.1.1.1 is not a valid IP address (I previously used -n 60 -w 1000 which should theoretically result in the same delay, but as Greg Hassler pointed out this may be highly inaccurate on some computers).

and regarding the device id; you can maybe get it a bit easier from device manager (start->control panel->system->hardware). Your tuner cards will be listed under sound, video and game controllers. mine are listed as "hauppauge wintv 88x video (dvb-t, mpeg) and (dvb-t+ir, mpeg)"
The one with out the +ir is the one you want the device id of. Double click it and select the details tab.....

I ran into this problem when I was using two Hauppauge cards recently.. here's a batch script I made that worked fine:

(you'll need to use devcon to find the device IDs for your cards)

you will also need both devcon and timeout for this script to work, should be able to google for these utilities. (timeout could be substituted for ping to localhost)

(I had moved the AutoStart IR shortcut to J:\Scripts .. so just change according to your setup)

Quote:rem Stop both cards
devcon disable "PCI\VEN_14F1*"
devcon disable "USB\VID_2040*"

rem Start the HVR-1600
devcon enable "PCI\VEN_14F1*"
timeout 3

rem Start IR driver
start "ir" "J:\Scripts\AutoStart IR.lnk"
timeout 3

rem Start the HVR-850
devcon enable "USB\VID_2040*"
