Missing TVNZ FreeviewHD channels

I'm using HVR2200 to received FreeviewHD. Worked fine last year but have been getting problems receiving TVNZ channels this year.

I just ran a rescan and all the TVNZ channels are gone. I seem to get everything else though (TV3, C3, Maori TV, Parliment TV, Chinese, tvCentral..).

I tried all the suggestions in http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=39138 but still no TVNZ channels.

When set to Waiatarua, I get zero signal strength and quality Scanning 1 of 3 and -20 and 100 for the scans 2 and 3. Does that mean a problem with my signal or my HVR2200?

Did you try scanning 'all regions' instead of Waiatarua specifically?

I tried scanning all regions as well. Took longer but still no TVNZ channels showed up in the scan.

Do you know if TVNZ is broadcasted on a different frequency that my antenna may not be getting a good signal for?

I'd check your antenna is pointing the right direction and your cables are good, and remove any cable splitters if you can.

The different frequencies are sometimes transmitted with different amounts of power, and have slightly different transmission characteristics, or other signals maybe interferring with that frequency, which all potentially add up to your capture card not being able to lock the signal.

The channels came back yesterday when I rescanned. Haven't touched anything. The on and off again nature of TVNZ channels makes any recording unreliable for me.

I'm quite sure that my UHF aerial is pointed correctly at Waitarua since I have no problems tuning DVB-T channels broadcasted by Mediaworks (570000) and Kordia (666000). My problem seems specific to TVNZ frequency 538000.


If I assume that TVNZ isn't playing around with their signal strengths, my guess would probably be something is intermittently interfering with that signal possibly atmospheric?


Is there anyone that has knowledge of DVB-T broadcast signals able to suggest anything that can make my tuning of TVNZ DVB-T channels more reliable?

Hi I also have trouble with TVNZ channels:

I can't find them when doing automatic scan, however I can find them doing a manual scan on 138MHz. I can then see those channels in the digital channel mapping window (in Digital Channels found during scan box) and can see the image and hear audio when clicking on it. But on the Channel details box it says the channel is not mapped and I can't add it to my list of channels.

what can I do?

I too have experienced this but got around it by editing the INI file to scan just 1 frequecny at a time (and do it 3 times). (Waitarua) is the 161.ini file) I thought it may be reception related as I had a dodgey UHF aerial. I have upgraded the aerial to a good 1 (and now get some UHF analog channels I didn't used to) but still experience the no TVNZ issues you refere to. Scanning just 1 frequency at a time gets me there in the end but if I just do the standard, it always leaves these out

It could still be an issue with your UHF aerial. It's orientation is obviously at least almost correct, otherwise you wouldn't get the Mediaworks and Kordia muxes, but the signal gain for all aerials does vary with frequency and the issue is receiving the lowest of the three frequency muxes. It's possible that the aerial orientation is just good enough for the Mediaworks and Kordia muxes on channels 33 and 45 but not quite good enough for TVNZ on channel 29 - in that case some fine tuning of the aerial orientation could do the trick.

It's also possible that signal loss further downstream - aerial cable, any splitters and plugs could be enough to take one end of the frequency range (where the aerial had lower gain) just below the necessary threshold and leave the signals from the other two muxes just good enough.

As an aside there is an interesting collection of aerial gain curves on this site: Aerials and TV - Aerial Tests
They show just how an aerial's gain can drop-off across a range of frequencies. In fact that site is packed full of useful information, but keep in mind that it is a British site, so non of the transmitter-specific information would be useful in New Zealand.

I too have difficulty scanning the TVNZ mux in 1.4.7 version on a HVR2200
The Prior version of GBpvr has no problem on same hardware (still using it's cached scan)
Nor has TSreader lite which shows I have an almost perfect reception for all muxes with a zero BERR
Nor has win 7's WMC

@engnz the alternate infill frequency for TVNZ's mux is on 530 Mhz

I too have played with the ini, and the delays in the Xml config file, The manual scan can give random and very funny results.

I don't know the answer, maybe TVNZ is doing something different on the auckland mux compared to the wellington one?

TVNZ's job aint done till GBPvr won't run (a scan)
