I have a video playback problem on my new build, tearing and bad quality on pans etc. Common suggestion is to try other codecs, is there a list somewhere as apart from NVIDA PureVideo and FFDSHOW I can't think of any...?

Also, how can you tell if a graphics card like the ATI HD4350 is in "hardware decoding" mode. Do I need to have a supported codec for this to work?

The Cyberlink PDVD Codec is pretty good... if you don't have one of the millions (billions?) of OEM PowerDVD disks that came with a DVD drive, you can get it as part of the K-Lite Codec pack. I've also seen some links posted here and there.

There's also the ATI AVIVO decoder; you get that as part of the AVIVO Package (yes, the list of goodies says nothing about a decoder, but it's there).

If you've ever installed Hauppauge's WinTV, that will include the "Intervideo non-css Decoder for Hauppauge"

The MPV decoder is here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/MPV_Decoder.htm

If you look in the config.xml, one of the first few lines is a list of every supported decoder.

As to getting Hardware acceleration, I've never been able to make it work correctly on my HD4550. If I turn on hardware acceleration, the video stutters horribly (only on 1080i channels though - 720p and 480i are fine). My only solution despite months of effort is to use Cyberlink PDVD 8 decoder with hardware acceleration disabled in the registry. So then I get tearing and poor de-interlacing, but I've given up and called it good enough.

what do you have 'wait for vertical resfresh' set to? try always on...[what is needed for tear-free video] tho i have a feeling it's broken [again!] in drivers...
with it off, it's supposed to play at native frame rate regardless of display output[tearing cuz they don't match pefectly], or 'on', making it wait and sync up vert with output display device, allowing vid card to adjust for interlaced displays,etc..
in the case of the ati drivers, they used to work properly when you set them, but lately, it's either 'on' or 'off', regardless of how you set it in ccc...so 8.11 is luckily 'broken' with the proper setting...Big Grin that 's all..really old drivers work properly in this respect tho and always did..only past 2xxx cards are they totally inconsistent about it all..

only other thing i can suggest if that doesn't work, is playing with hw accell settings with dxvachecker and seeing if anything works...
i think the hi-end cards actually work, [4870 etc.] and the cheap ones i bet money will work in a few months...i confirmed cat is still broken for 3xxx cards for 8.12+...but 8..11 still works charm tho..on every pre-3xxx card it supports also..! i would try them just in case...i believe 4xx are supported in it..

you can tell when you have it working, when cpu is below 20% playing hd video...[or any video really] plus temp, etc. in ccc will show it..

avivo is probably the best bet as far as codecs go, it can cheat, so will probably be first one they get working...just set it in config, should come with drivers as avivo package [separate download] and you can try other versions of avivo no matter the cat driver version you're using...
and use vmr9fse...or evr..

[and Avivo is the only codec i know to have full decode and hw deinterlace support in xp with ati cards]

silly thing is, i just came into a agp 3450 and it also works a charm with blu-ray and hdmi...[w/8.11 drivers i had to make as well, they make you make you own for agp cards! a-holes]
it has same exact results with the drivers too..great w/8.11 sucks on anything newer..

While it is stupid that they don't just make the drivers compatible with AGP, or at least provide an obvious download link for the AGP versions on the main page, they don't make you build your own:

For some reason I think that ATI AVIVO would be best as I have an ATI card. Does it do sound too?

Where is this 'wait for vertical refresh' set?

I think it's in the 3D section of the CCC, if you set it to "Quality", I think that's "Always On"

I get 11% to 19% cpu usage when playing SD video of a (UK Freeview) live TV feed. I assume it's just pvrx2.exe I need to watch?

edit: This is with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5050e (2x2.6Ghz)

Hi, I've been trying out different video codecs. The best free one is "MPC video decoder" that comes with media player classic home cinema (prob the same one that is linked to in post 2). When set to bob deinterlace it outputs 50fps and is very smooth and clear. But it doesn't switch aspect ratio when the video changes aspect.

Worst ones i've tried are nvidia purevideo and elecard. Very unimpressive.

Cyberlink and Arcsoft are both excelent. I'm using arcsoft at the moment, but it would be pretty hard to tell between them. I can show you where to get them if you want to try them.
