Anyone heard of this, or have any experience with putting one together.

I am thinking this might be something i want to put together so i can have some sort of way to recover from a drive going down

There a quite a few guys on AVS using it. I typically prefer hardware raaid but unraid is not standard software raid and I don't have any hands on experience with it.

if you want something similar, probably more capable and open source, check out FreeNAS: http://www.freenas.org/

I've not actually used for a production system, but I've tested it quite a bit and found it to be very clever and capable software. Runs like a greased monkey on old, slow hardware.
