s-video recording of HD channels. Has anybody tried this? I know it isn't the very desireable but I am a bit curious how it compares to s-video recording of SD content. Very minimal difference, noticeable, or other?

its only going to record the same 480i ntsc 576i pal resolution regardless of what you feed it
the difference would come in recording a digital transmission(converted to analog) versus a analog transmission subject to ghosting and other interference been recorded
so recording a digital signal been converted to analog has advantages but HD has no more advantage although some would swear it looks better but thats probably cause the SD digital signal(picture) they were feeding it was crap analog converted to digital then transmitted (or any number of other things that can happen by the broadcaster)

I found that svideo recording of a digital source, SD or HD, beat the socks off an svideo recording of an analog source. I was using an RCA digital converter box several years ago when digital was just starting to be available. I fed it into the svideo input of a PVR150 card.

I have DirecTV who supposedly compresses the original SD signal to crap.

Thanks. That is what I suspected.

I have DirectTV, and record standard-def over S-Video.
The quality is OK, and for the most part looks fine on my 42" LCD TV.
I'm not the most critical TV viewer, however.

I just bought a 42" LCD and I upgraded to HD. Once I had it all set up I was extremely dissappointed with the quality of the s-video recordings, at first. However, I was changing things in GBPVR and for some reason I tried EVR which I hadn't tried in months and had not used due to tearing since I have XP. Going to EVR made all the difference in the world and now I don't have to spend on an HD-PVR. There is the expected loss in quality but it is much much better than SD with the old DirecTV receiver.
