Here is a batch file and registry file to quickly set the GB-PVR Recording Service to "Interact with desktop".

The included "Set Interact with Desktop.cmd" will import the appropriate registry setting and restart the recording service. If you have not disabled UAC, you will need to right click the .cmd file and "Run as Administrator".

Alternatively, if you are not running UAC, you can just double click the "GB-PVR Recording Service (Interact).reg" file and import the setting into the registry. You will then have to restart the GB-PVR Recording Service for the change to take effect.

There is also a .reg file to set it back to the default if you choose to do so.

For those who like to edit the registry manually, the appropriate entries are as follows:

Interact with desktop:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\GB-PVR Recording Service]
"Type"=dword:00000110

Installation default:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\GB-PVR Recording Service]
"Type"=dword:00000010

whurlston, I'm not sure this logic is valid if you run as another user.

If you mean when the recording service is set to run as a specific user, the "Interact with desktop" option does not apply at that point (you can't select it in the service properties).

If you mean that you run the script as one user and then log on as another user, it will work as the setting is still in effect. It is set in the "LocalMachine" registry data and not under "CurrentUser". (I also checked it under a second user login.)

Is there any downside to allowing Interact with the Desktop? If there isn't any, then perhaps sub should just make it the default in the GB-PVR installer.

When I switched to Windows 7 I found the web server couldn't start until I enabled this. It never bothered me with XP, as I didn't have any of the other bits that usually require this (ir blaster, mvp/nmt, etc.).

I've changed it to default to this in the next release.

Will that make the MVP server window show on an XP desktop? (I thought I had to make it not interact to stop this window appearing)

Possibly on XP. I'm not sure. You'll still be able to turn it off.

I think the majority of people need it on these days, so probably best enabled by default.

no, it won't show mvp server window as it's hidden by gbpvr, but it will show comskip sessions, and if you alt-tab to the mvp server it will show up...
[just close it and it will start again hidden]

i personally like it to be logged in as a user, that way you get net access, hipsend channel changes and no mvp server or comskip windows ever...[and you can't switch to them either...]

i wish the installer would query the service and keep whatever is already there..
[user/ local/ localw/interact]

but i can understand that might be harder as it requires a password entry...
but may be able to pass credentials along to new exe without changing it...
sc.exe is a nice built-in tool that can do anything you wish with a service...

whurlston, the reason I asked I thought you needed to use ( | 256 ) to preserve the user's server settings. I guess you will find out.

JohnnyCam if a user has interact with desktop off for the MVP, ffmpeg or zprocess transcoding will fail, so I expect most MVP users would have it on.
