I was wondering about sending my PVR to sleep when it's not busy, but don't really see much mention of how GBPVR interacts with Windows to
  • Ensure that it wakes up for scheduled tasks.
Not go to sleep when playing a recording.
Not go to sleep when recording something.

It would be helpful to get some guidelines on what hooks Sub has already put into the system to prevent suspend/hiberation and how some of the utilities available behave.

Oh yeah, and it's time for a new release -- been six months!

Thanks,
Dane

For each pending recording the app will call the SetWaitableTimer(), to request use of the machine 90 seconds prior to the time the recording is due to start. Windows is then responsible for making sure the machine is awake at that time.

Not go to sleep when recording something.
When recording, or playing a video, the app will regularly call "SetThreadExecutionState(ES_SYSTEM_REQUIRED)" to let the system know that the system is still in use.

Yeah, I know. You'll have to blame my employer for keeping me too busy to do much GB-PVR stuff recently, and me wanting to work extra hard in these tough economic times to make sure I keep my job.

Don't forget the most important reason: The wife you will have to face should you lose your job for not working hard enough to keep your employer happy!

You don't really have to do anything other than setup windows to go to standby or hibernate after xx minutes of inactivity. GBPVR handles everything else "out of the box".

It is possible there could be complications with some tuners that don't like going to sleep/waking up. This seems to be more with USB (and pseudo USB) tuners from what I've seen.

Just try it and see.

I find that windows (in my case vista) power management generally works fine for ages. PC wakes up in time to record, doesn;t miss recordings, goes to sleep after x mins idle. Great. Then some process will trip it up and prevent hibernation and it's a sod trying to figure out what it is (easier to reboot pc to clear it down).

It would be good if the windows power management had some tracing that logged what processes were keeping it awake. (Possibly this can be done via Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) but I'm no coder.
